Chief Detective 1958 starring Lee Je-hoon, Lee Dong-hwi, Choi Woo-sung, Yoon Hyun-soo, and Seo Eun-soo aired its finale episode on May 18, at 9:50 pm KST on MBC. The drama has garnered attention from fans as this show serves as the prequel to the Korean drama Chief of Investigation or Chief Inspector which aired for 18 years from 1971 to 1989.

The crime action drama has marked a 9.3% average nationwide viewership ratings with the ninth episode raising anticipation for the finale.

Depicting the retro crime investigation in the 1950s and 1960s in Seoul, Chief Detective 1958 follows the story of a detective Park Young-han portrayed by Lee Je-hoon who follows the principles of justice during the era of deception and bribery in the police department.

The show also illustrated a comic and wholesome synergy between him and his team members Kim Sang-sun (Lee Dong-hwi), Jo Gyeong-hwan (Choi Woo-sung), and Seo Ho-jeong (Yoon Hyun-soo).

Unit 1 of Jongnam Police Station was led by Chief Yu Dae-cheon, depicted by actor Choi Deok-moon. The team was different from others and strived to bring justice to the weak while fighting the existing corruption in the police department.

Chief Detective 1958 finale: Lee Je-hoon cracks the missing persons' case bringing justice to the deceased

Park Young-han alongside Kim Sang-sun, Seo Ho-jeong, and Jo Gyeong-hwan figured out the missing persons' case in the final episode of Chief Detective 1958. Jung Hee-sung (Lee Bong-Joon), the son of a prominent figure in Seoul was behind the Dong San Textile missing persons' case, he was also found to be the killer of Kim Soon-jung.

Furthermore, to get rid of the witnesses he got involved in a hit-and-run case. This car accident killed two of his friends No Yoon-Hak (Cho Min-Kyu) and Kwon Hyung-Geun (Kim Tae-Jung) and sent Nam Jung-gil (Kim Min) into an unconscious state.

As Jung Hee-sung tried to kill Nam Jung-gil who finally came back to a normal state, Park Young-han caught him red-handed and arrested him. However, due to their corrupt Senior Superintendent Baek Do-seok (Kim Min-jae), it was not an easy task for Unit 1 to arrest all the perpetrators in this case.

Baek Do-seok was the one who got rid of Kim Soon-jung’s body for Jung Hee-sung, and he also planned on fleeing the country with the help of Jung Byung-Pil following the closure of the Dong San textile case.

Jung Byung-Pil was one of the important officials who held power over many public servants including Baek Do-seok, notably, he was also the father of Jung Hee-sung. Baek Do-seok was caught in action and was executed as legal punishment for his crimes.

Possibility of a second season of Chief Detective 1958?

Chief Detective 1958 ended on a happy note as Park Young-han was promoted to the Chief of Unit 1 at the Jongnam Police Station and Chief Yu Dae-cheon was promoted to the position of Senior Superintendent. However, the show left room for queries regarding Jung Hee-sung’s punishment. Park Young-han was seen expressing his regrets about not being able to catch Jung Byung-pil, Jung Hee-sung’s father during this case.

Furthermore, Lee Hye-ju (played by Seo Eun-soo), Park Young-han's wife, appreciated his efforts while encouraging him to do even better in the future. This scene hinted at the possibility of a second season for Chief Detective 1958.

MBC Drama Studio CEO Shin Hyeon-chang hinted at the possible renewal of another season in an interview with Edaily. He stated:

"We plan to proceed with the remake when we have the confidence to present works that are as good as the original. MBC Drama Studio plans to continue the 'Investigative Chief OOOO' series, which covers the time between 'Investigative Chief 1958', the original 'Investigative Chief 1958,' and the period after 1989, with seasons."

In a recent interview with Hankyung, actor Lee Je-hoon also shared his thoughts on a second season. He stated:

"I also definitely have expectations. But this is something I cannot decide. On the other hand, Choi Bul-am (senior actor who played Park Young-han in Chief of Investigation) appeared from the beginning, appeared in the 6th episode, and brought it to a conclusion until the end of the 10th episode. I also thought that this would be enough as a prequel and completed drama."

However, nothing has been officially confirmed by the production team.

Chief Detective 1958 is available for fans and viewers on the OTT platform Disney +. It is also set to release on Hulu on May 22, 2024.
