Former WWE star injured - Report

A former WWE Superstar recently got injured during a show. The star being discussed is Athena.

The War Goddess wrestled as Ember Moon in WWE. She was part of the NXT brand for the majority of her run. She was eventually released by the Stamford-based promotion in November 2021.

Athena made her AEW debut in 2022. After some decent performances in the Jacksonville-based promotion, she competed in the company's sister promotion, Ring of Honor (ROH). The War Goddess quickly rose to the top and captured the ROH Women's World Championship after defeating Mercedes Martinez. She also wrestled some incredible matches in 2023. Athena has competed in several matches this year and has defended her ROH Women's World Championship against names such as Red Velvet and Hikaru Shida. The 35-year-old star has been the longest-reigning ROH Women's World Champion, having held the title for more than 518 days at this point.

The War Goddess competed against Viva Van during this week's ROH tapings. After Athena went flying through the ropes into the ground at one point in the match, she was seen limping following the spot and went to a quick finish. According to a report from PWInsider, she injured her left leg and the severity of the injury is still unknown.

What the future has in store for the former WWE Superstar remains to be seen.

Athena said she was levels above a former WWE Superstar

Athena recently talked about former WWE Superstar Mercedes Mone, formerly known as Sasha Banks, and claimed that the latter brings star power to AEW.

While speaking with Good Karma Wrestling, The War Goddess talked about Mone's aura and great character work. She also took a shot at The CEO later, saying that she was tiers above Mercedes.

"From her being in the Mandalorian to her being a multi-time world champion to just the charisma and aura that she brings into every moment that she’s on TV. I really feel like that is what’s going to set this women’s division over the edge in AEW. Now, with that being said, your Minion Overlord is just tiers above her. Tiers above her, like she’s doing great over there, we’re doing the Minion Overlord's work over here," Athena said. [H/T Fightful]

It will be interesting to see if Athena is forced to vacate the ROH Women's World Championship after sustaining the injury.
