Oscar De La Hoya's comments on Ryan Garcia's loss to Gervonta Davis in April 2023 has probably garnered him the most flack from fans as a promoter.

After the fight, a reporter asked De La Hoya for his thoughts on the fight, to which the former champion gave a few peculiar responses. 'The Golden Boy' credited Davis for what he called a "perfect game plan" but then went on to say he believed someone within Garcia's team leaked information to the WBA lightweight champion.

De La Hoya said:

"You saw a superior Tank Davis. He had the perfect game plan... People talk about the mole, and I believe there was a mole. But obviously, the weight draining was a big issue."

De La Hoya continued to discuss fan criticism of him missing the press conference by saying:

"It's all by design. Obviously, people are trying to wedge me and Ryan [apart]. We have something great going on. We have something amazing going here for his career and he's on the rise even though he lost."

Fans were not cutting De La Hoya any slack, bashing the promoter in the comments for his excuses. One fan even accused him of being the "mole," writing:

"'By design?' Oscar truly is a sociopath man"
"Mole, rehydration clause, fairy dust, it doesn't matter. Tank would've beat him regardless"

Gervonta Davis announces next fight against Frank Martin

After a year away from the ring, Gervonta Davis announced he will be returning on June 15 to defend his lightweight title against Frank Martin. The announcement came just hours before the Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia pay-per-view main event on April 20.

Per Premier Boxing Champions, the fight will be available for pay-per-view on Amazon Prime Video from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The co-main event will feature WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez also defending his belt against Alexandr Gvozdyk.

The announcement came two days before the first anniversary of Gervonta Davis' blockbuster fight with Garcia, a fight 'Tank' won by seventh-round TKO. The win improved Davis to 29-0 but he has not competed since.

Martin will enter the fight at 18-0 and will also be coming off a long layoff, last beating Artem Harutyunyan on July 15, 2023.
