Daniel Cormier was adamant that Islam Makhachev didn't outwrestle him.

This was despite video evidence showing the UFC lightweight champion getting the better of 'DC' during wrestling practice. Makhachev also posted the clip on Instagram for everyone to see.

However, Cormier insisted that he ultimately won the match. During a recent episode of the DC & RC, the UFC Hall of Famer told his co-host Ryan Clark:

"Ryan, don't buy the video. First off, Makhachev has the greatest video editors of all time. Because, yes, he did get points there. He four points in wrestling 'cause we were wrestling. But Ryan, he didn't put the rest of the match. If you scrolled on the rest of the videos, there was a guy called Romero Cotton that was the official. He was scoring the points. By the end of the match, I was the guy with my hand raised."

Cormier and Makhachev, of course, have been longtime friends and training partners at the American Kickboxing Academy. The wrestling match also appeared to be a playful one, with both men not really taking it seriously.

Daniel Cormier lauds Islam Makhachev for recent title win

Daniel Cormier believes Islam Makhachev displayed the most dominant performance from a title challenger against Charles Oliveira at UFC 280.

Makhachev made good on his promise, making easy work of Oliveira during their main event title clash last month. Cormier, who has repeatedly sung Makhachev's praises, stated how impressed he was with his teammate's showing.

"He did it to a Charles 'do Bronx' Oliveira who was in shape, who was prepared, but he knew exactly what he needed to do and I thought that was shown very early in the fight. I’ve been in this kid’s arm triangle. It’s so tight. The moment he was able to clear guard, Charles Oliveira tapped, and I’m telling you, it was one of the most dominant performances that we’ve ever seen from a challenger."

Cormier also said that he always knew Makhachev was "the best guy in the room." But he wouldn't go as far as saying he's better than Khabib Nurmagomedov.
