Michael Chandler is easily one of the most exciting fighters to watch in the UFC's lightweight division and the American is known for his epic wars in the octagon. However, perennial UFC welterweight contender Matt Brown recently claimed that this very trait is what prevents Chandler from becoming champion.

Chandler came over to the UFC in 2020 as a three-time Bellator lightweight champion with an enviable college wrestling pedigree. He has since earned four post-fight bonuses in five appearances in the UFC and has a record of 2-3 in the octagon.

In a recent conversation with Damon Martin on MMAFighting's The Fighter vs. The Writer podcast, Brown discussed Chandler's fighting style and whether 'Iron' needs to choose between entertaining the masses or winning titles.

Brown compared Michael Chandler to boxing great Arturo Gatti, who was someone who could take immense punishment but faced one-in-a-million odds when going up against the best. He claimed that 'Iron' could be Floyd Mayweather instead if he chose to tweak his fighting strategy and perhaps win the title someday. Brown said:

"He chooses to be Arturo Gatti when he could be Floyd Mayweather. Whether that’s right or wrong, we’ll have to see if he ever changes up his style, but that’s what it seems to me is his own choice.”

Michael Chandler backs Alexander Volkanovski to beat Islam Makhachev at UFC 284

Michael Chandler believes that Alexander Volkanovski has what it takes to outpoint Islam Makhachev to win a decision in their upcoming bout at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia.

Volkanovski and Makhachev will go head-to-head in a lightweight matchup on February 12 to find out who leaves the octagon with the 155-pound strap and is crowned the pound-for-pound (P4P) king.

While many have predicted the Dagestani grappling savant will emerge victorious over the Australian, 'Iron' has a contrarian opinion. In a recent interview with Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie, Michael Chandler gave his take on the lightweight title fight and outlined a prediction:

"I’m a huge Alexander Volkanovski fan... I do think Volkanovski is going to do better than we all think he does. In the striking department, Volkanovski is better than him. I think in the speed and power department, Volkanovski is better than him... I think Volkanovski might actually squeak out a decision."
