WrestleMania 9: Top 5 matches from the PPV

Tatanka defeats Mr. WrestleMania

The first WrestleMania to be held outdoorsWe are less than a month away from the most picturesque WWE event of the year, WrestleMania 32. Talk about the list of top 5/10 sporting events in a calendar year and guess what, WrestleMania would always feature in that list. An event with a lot of anticipation and build-up has always contained something phenomenal and the WWE team would try everything at their disposal to make it a blockbuster. This year’s Mania would be the biggest ever in the history of the company and there is every reason to watch out for it. We, the WWE fans, watch WWE all round the year and still eagerly wait for WrestleMania. We watch 54 RAWs, 54 SmackDowns, 54 NXTs, 11 other WWE PPVs and a lot of live-events but still when it comes to WrestleMania, all these shows we watch become just too ordinary.Mania is aloof and one of its own kind.WrestleMania 32 is very important for the company as the WWE ratings have abated in the 12 months and the company would try to get back on track by reaping the maximum benefits from this show. The ninth edition of WrestleMania was held at Caesars Palace in Paradise, Nevada on April 4, 1993, and was the first WrestleMania event held outdoors. This show recorded an attendance of 16,891. With all that being said, we will quickly recap some of the interesting things from WrestleMania 9-

#5 Tatanka vs. Shawn Michaels

Tatanka defeats Mr. WrestleMania

This was the second match of the night and was arguably one of the most physical matches on offer. It lasted for more than 18 minutes and the WWF Intercontinental Championship was on the line in this one.

Shawn Michaels defended it against Tatanka, who was accompanied by Sensational Sherri. Here, there was a hint of paradox because it was exactly a year earlier at WrestleMania 8 that Sensational Sherri sided with Michaels and played a part in his victory.

Something similar happened at Mania 9 as well. As said by a great man once, what goes around comes around. The only positive thing for Michaels here is that Tatanka won by a count out, which means that the title didn’t change hands..

Winner: Tatanka

#4 Razor Ramon vs. Bob Backlund

Short and Sweet

The fifth match of the night was between Razor Ramon and Bob Backlund. This was a singles match with no stipulations. During the entire course of the match, Bob Backlund tried to counter Ramon with his traditional wrestling manoeuvres and hip tosses but that wasn’t good enough to take the big Razor down.

Razor, on the other hand, used his strength to attack Bob and was pretty successful in doing so. In a match that lasted for 4 brief minutes, Razor delivered a Small Package and added an easy victory to his match wallet.

Winner: Razor Ramon

#3 Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez

A battle of the big guns

In his third WrestleMania outing, The Undertaker faced the 7’5’’ monster, Giant Gonzalez. Throughout the match, Gonzalez used nothing but his power to put the phenom down. The fact that Gonzalez was a very poor in-ring technician was evident after just 2-3 minutes into the match.

During the match, Gonzalez’s manager Wippleman gave his client a rag soaked with chloroform and he used it to put Undertaker down. The referee had to call off the match and eventually, Taker won it by DQ.

With this, Undertaker improved his WrestleMania streak to 3-0.

Winner: The Undertaker by DQ

#2 Hulk Hogan vs. Yokozuna

The Hulkster stands tall

In a backstage segment, Hogan spoke about his desire to face the Champion of the main event between Bret Hart and Yokozuna. After the match was over, Hogan came to check Hart's condition and it was then Fuji once again made his presence felt by challenging the Hulkster for a match with Yokozuna on the spot.

Hogan accepted the challenge and the bell rang to kick off the match. Fuji tried to sprinkle salt in Hogan's eyes but the immortal one escaped the attack and the whole thing backfired as Yokozuna, in turn, became the victim of the salt attack.

Hogan capitalized by hitting a leg drop and won the title in under 22 seconds.

Winner: Hulk Hogan

#1 The Main Event

Strength vs. Class

The main event of WrestleMania 9 featured a bout between Bret Hart and the 590-pound monster, Yokozuna. Hart defended his WWF World Heavyweight Championship against Yokozuna and the match was a battle between Class and Strength.

Hart countered Yokozuna, relying on his technical wrestling expertise, whereas Yokozuna used his weight and strength to dominate Hart. Yokozuna beat Hart with his signature clotheslines and nerve holds but Hart sustained the beating and showcased his resilience.

During the closing moments of the match, Hart ripped the turnbuckle off and exposed the metal post and rammed Yokozuna’s face onto the steel. He immediately seized the moment and applied the sharpshooter.

Yokozuna's manager, Mr. Fuji came into the picture and threw salt into Hart's eyes. Yokozuna took advantage and pinned Hart for the victory and the behemoth was crowned the new WWF World Heavyweight Champion.

Winner: Yokozuna
