Wrestlemania Rewind: Mick Foley vs Edge - Wrestlemania 22

The granddaddy of them all, Wrestlemania is only days away. The anticipation for the extravaganza is sky high among the WWE Universe. And since the pay-per-view is richer than Richie rich when it comes to history, we have decided to take a look back at some of the best Wrestlemania matches of all time with this latest series.Over the last thirty years, WWE fans have witnessed some great Wrestlemania matches. One of those classics came at Wrestlemania 22 when Edge battled Mick Foley on his own turf, Hardcore Rules.

#1 The build-up

Despite having an amazing career filled with spectacular matches, Mick Foley never really had a proper Wrestlemania moment, but he looked to change that in his match with Edge.

Edge had just recently lost the WWE championship and blamed Foley who was the special guest ref. He coaxed Foley into accepting a match by insulting him and offering him with a chance to create his defining Wrestlemania moment.

Foley accepted and declared to bring out his old hardcore self and with that the bout was set. A legend, Mick Foley looked to cement his legacy while an up & coming heel Edge looked to stomp out the past while catapulting his own career.

#2 The match

The match itself delivered on all accounts. It was a classic brutal hardcore bout that exceeded all expectations.

Early on Edge hit a spear but was unable to capitalize and Foley revealed he had barb wire strapped to his body (hidden beneath a shirt). From there the brutality continued. Edge was dropped bare backed onto tacks, Foley was busted up and bleeding from ear to ear while the hardcore action intensified.

The ending however created the most memorable moment of the entire bout. As Foley prepared a table outside the ring lighting it on fire, Lita was able to strike him with a baseball bat to aid Edge. Edge then proceeded to create history by spearing Foley to the outside through the flaming table. Both men were visibly in pain but it was Edge who picked up the pinfall.

Edge has successfully cemented himself as a top tier talent while Foley had finally produced his own spectacular Wrestlemania moment.

#3 The aftermatch

Edge and Foley created an extremely memorable moment that night that will be remembered for many years to come.

Having defeated the hardcore legend Mick Foley in his own environment, Edge declared that he deserved another shot at the WWE championship.

At backlash, we saw John Cena defend his title in a triple threat match against both Edge and Triple H. Cena won the match by pinning HHH but was then attacked (along with Edge) after the bell with a sledgehammer.

A few months later, Edge would actually team up with Foley at the ECW One Night Stand PPV. Foley, Edge & Lita defeated Tommy Dreamer, Terry Funk, Beulah McGillicutty in an extreme rules match up.
