2003: Ken Bates, the owner and chairman of Chelsea, sold the club to a little-known 36-year-old Russian businessman Roman Abramovich.

1959: Birth of Anne Smith, a female former professional tennis player from the United States. Smith’s highest women’s doubles ranking was World No. 1 in 1980 and 1981 and her highest singles ranking was World No. 12 in 1982.
