For years on end, mainstream media has belittled pro-wrestling, especially WWE, as being a "fake sport". Wrestling fans have had countless arguments with detractors of the sport, with many pointing towards matches like the Hell In A Cell encounter between Mankind and The Undertaker at King of the Ring 1998.

All things considered, pro-wrestling is far from a fake sport and even though the fights and promos are scripted, it doesn't mean that the wrestlers who perform in the ring don't get hurt while entertaining the fans. WWE's decades-long history has seen a long string of injuries that have happened while Superstars were performing in the ring, or during a segment. In the following list, we will take a look at 3 WWE Superstars who injured themselves. We will also focus on 3 WWE Superstars who injured other wrestlers in the ring.

#6 John Cena (injured himself)

John Cena
John Cena

By the time 2007 came around, John Cena had already become a megastar in WWE and had registered wins over some of the biggest names in all of WWE. As the year was nearing its end, John Cena took on Mr. Kennedy on an episode of RAW. During the closing moments of the match, Cena executed a hip toss on Kennedy, and tore his pectoral muscle while doing so. He quickly applied an STFU on a fallen Kennedy and made him tap out to pick up the win.

At that time, it was speculated that Cena would be out of action for around 6 to 12 months. Soon after, Mr. McMahon came out on ECW TV and stripped him off the WWE title. At the 2008 Royal Rumble PPV, Cena made his return to the ring, in a what was a major surprise. He went on to win the annual free-for-all and punched his ticket to the main event of WrestleMania 24.

#5 Nia Jax (injured Becky Lynch)

At WWE Survivor Series 2018, Becky Lynch was scheduled to take on Ronda Rousey in an Interbrand match between the two Women's Champions. Mere days before the match, Lynch and a bunch of WWE SmackDown female Superstars invaded Monday Night RAW and launched a ruthless attack on the Women's division. Lynch attacked Rousey in a backstage area and came out to the ring to confront the other women of the Red brand.

The next few minutes were absolute chaos, as Becky and company put down the women of RAW, one after the other. During the scuffle, Nia Jax punched Lynch in the face a bit too hard and opened her up in the process. The final image of the segment was Lynch looking down at the ring, surrounded by the WWE Universe, with her face turned crimson due to Nia's botch. The botch helped Lynch garner more fan support and she went on to win the 2019 Royal Rumble. Lynch took on Rousey and Charlotte Flair in the first-ever Women's main event of WrestleMania and left the stadium carrying both Women's titles on her shoulders.

#4 Edge (injured himself)

WWE Hall of Famer Edge made his miraculous return to WWE at the 2020 Royal Rumble and had a strong showing in the match. He soon got into a heated rivalry with his former tag team partner, Randy Orton. Edge and Orton faced off in a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania 36, which the former won. The feud was far from over though. The duo went at it again, this time at WWE Backlash 2020, in what the company promoted as "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever".

During the match, Edge tore his tricep and later revealed a bunch of gruesome pictures highlighting the injury. Edge also revealed the exact moment when he injured himself while speaking about the same in an interview.

I did a springboard into the second RKO. I went 'ooh.' I got the cold sweats and I feel like I'm going to throw up. That's usually a sign, that's where it popped.

"The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever" ended with Orton coming out on top. The injury that Edge suffered in the match has taken him out of action and he won't be coming back to the ring for the next several months. Here's hoping that Edge goes on to make a full recovery.

#3 Seth Rollins (injured Finn Balor)

Finn Balor made his way to the main roster in 2016, as the fifth pick of the 2016 WWE Draft. Immediately upon his arrival on WW RAW, Balor won a Fatal 4-Way match that also featured Rusev, Cesaro, and Kevin Owens. He went on to defeat Roman Reigns to bag an opportunity at the Universal title, that WWE had established a short while ago.

At SummerSlam 2016, Balor defeated Seth Rollins to become the first-ever Universal Champion. The next night on WWE RAW, it was revealed that Balor had suffered a shoulder injury during the match, and was forced to vacate his newly-won belt. Rollins had launched Balor into the barricade at one point, which ultimately resulted in him getting injured. Triple H could be seen getting emotional in the backstage area, as Balor relinquished his belt. In the clip embedded above, you can witness the exact moment when Balor got injured. He made his return to the ring in March 2017, at a WWE live event.

#2 Triple H (injured himself)

Triple H

Back in 2006, D-Generation X reunited in one of the most anticipated reunions in WWE history. Triple H and Shawn Michaels were being targeted by Vince and Shane McMahon for a while at that point, and the duo finally joined forces to take on the evil father-son duo. DX went on to have a months-long rivalry with the WWE Chairman, which ended at WWE Unforgiven 2006, where DX defeated Big Show, Vince, and Shane in a 3-on-2 Handicap match inside Hell In A Cell.

DX immediately went on to feud with Rated-RKO, a stable that Edge and Randy Orton had formed specifically to take out the duo. The rivalry culminated at New Year's Revolution 2007, where Rated-RKO defended their Tag Team titles against DX. During the match, Triple H connected a Spinebuster on The Viper and suffered an injury on his right leg in the process. The bout ended in a no-contest and Triple H's injury forced him out of action for the next several months. He also missed WrestleMania 23 that year, which was headlined by Shawn Michaels vs John Cena for the WWE Championship.

#1 Sasha Banks (injured Paige)

Paige and Banks
Paige and Banks

Paige made her long-anticipated return to WWE TV in late 2017 and brought along Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville with her. The trio was dubbed 'Absolution' and established themselves as heels. On the fateful night of December 27, 2017, Paige teamed up with Mandy and Deville in a 6-Woman Tag Team match. At one point during the bout, Banks hit Paige with a kick, while the latter had her back towards "The Boss".

The match had to be stopped immediately, and the medical personnel soon rushed to the ring to tend to Paige. Paige was out of action for months on end and appeared at WrestleMania 34's pre-show to do commentary during the WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal. Paige announced her retirement on the next night on WWE RAW and was soon appointed as the General Manager of WWE SmackDown. She later managed The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane), and also had a stint on WWE Backstage as a panelist. Paige has had surgery on her neck since then, and chances are incredibly slim of her making a return somewhere down the line.
