3 WWE tag team breakups that worked out and 2 that didn't

Tag Team wrestling has evolved with each passing decade in WWE. From former tag teams such as The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz, to the current tandems like The New Day and The Usos, WWE has always been home to some of the best teams in the world. The matches that took place between some of these teams stole the show on several occasions, sometimes even surpassing other divisions.

Now, many of these tag teams break-up in case WWE wants to push one star as a singles competitor. WWE's storied history is filled with some of the biggest and most influential tag team breakups of all time.

So, here are three tag team break-ups that worked out and 2 that didn't...

#5 Worked Out: The Hardy Boyz

Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy have had legendary tag team rivalries with Edge and Christian and The Dudley Boyz, that revolutionized tag team wrestling. WWE decided to break the tag team up at Royal Rumble 2009. Matt Hardy would go on to cost Jeff Hardy his WWE title match at the PPV, leading to an Extreme Rules match at WrestleMania 25.

Jeff was getting the push he deserved, until he was released by the company in late 2009. The duo invented the Broken gimmick in Impact Wrestling and finally returned at WrestleMania 33, winning the Raw Tag Team Championships in the process. Jeff was sent to SmackDown Live at the Superstar Shake-Up 2018, kicking off another push for him to the main event, although it didn't go anywhere.

#4 Didn't Work Out: The Dudley Boyz

Just like The Hardy Boyz, WWE went ahead with the breakup of the most decorated tag team of all-time: The Dudley Boyz. They were one of the top tag teams during the early 2000s, but WWE decided to split them to pursue individual careers. WWE didn't let them turn on each other though, and instead drafted both men to different rosters in the brand split of 2002.

It ended up being a failure, leading to WWE reforming the team. Later, both Superstars landed jobs in separate promotions until returning to WWE in 2015. They mostly put over other tag teams during this run. After a year later, The Dudley Boyz announced that they will be leaving the promotion once again. Finally, they were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018.

#3 Worked Out: Edge and Christian

The duo of Edge and Christian was another spectacular tag team in the early 2000s. Both Superstars were best friends who arrived in the business together. They took the tag team division to extreme levels while competing against other tag teams. They also become seven-time WWE tag team champions. Finally, WWE decided to break-up the duo as singles stars.

It was Christian who turned heel and attacked his best friend Edge on Raw is War in 2001. This turn resulted in Edge's career turning into a huge success, as he went on to become eleven-time World Champion. He retired on the Raw after WrestleMania 27. Christian didn't achieve similar success, but still ended up becoming a two-time World Champion.

#2 Didn't Work Out: Enzo Amore and Big Cass

Enzo Amore and Big Cass were expected to be the top tag team in the division, when they arrived on the main roster. The duo achieved immense popularity during their time in NXT. Unfortunately, after debuting on the main roster, they were heavily misused. Vince McMahon later decided to split the duo in a backstage angle in 2017.

While Amore was sent to the Cruiserweight division and became the Cruiserweight champion, he was released in 2018 following serious allegations against him, that ended up proving false. As for Cass, he injured his knee which kept him off for nine months. When he returned from injury, he lost a feud against Daniel Bryan and was later released for inappropriate behavior.

#1 Worked Out: The Rockers

The Rockers was one of the most loved tag teams of the late-80s. The company saw stardom in Shawn Michaels and decided to split the duo. During the barbershop segment in 1992, Michaels hit Marty Jannetty with a super-kick and put him through a window, initiating a singles career going forward.

While it didn't work out for Jannetty, since his career fell apart after the split, it gave the fans one of the greatest WWE Superstars of all time, Shawn Michaels. While there were many plans to reform them, none of those were ever implemented. This separation gave Michaels huge success as a singles star, so it can be surmised that this split actually worked out, at least for one half of the tag team.
