Mystery angles have been part of professional wrestling since the dawn of time and only really work and remain with fans for a long time if the show bothers to follow through and reveal an unexpected outcome at the end.

Every feud needs a big pay-off and every tales need a satisfying ending and since these mystery storylines ideas rely upon fans' reactions, many storylines end in a whimper or do not end at all. The storylines and angles keep on changing throughout its course, depending on writer's creativity and audience's response.

Some storylines like McMahon vs Austin, the summer of Punk, and the Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels have stood the test of time and fans still remember those feuds like their childhood memories.

However not every mystery angle lives up to the hype and there have been many storylines whose outcomes are nothing short of underwhelming. Here are such 4 storylines which started on the right note and had so much potential moving forward, but their wheels began to fall off as it progressed.

#4 What Happened in Milwaukee?

Aiden blames Lana for Rusev Day's downfall

The storyline between Lana, Aiden English and Rusev was the talk of the town in September 2018. After losing a United States Championship match against Shinsuke Nakamura, Rusev was surprisingly attacked by English and he addressed the issue a week later by accusing Lana of the downfall of Rusev Day.

He went on to cryptically ask Lana, “Are you going to tell him about that one night in Milwaukee?” before stepping to the backstage area. He later revealed in a backstage interview that he would provide video evidence next week. This led to a whole new debate in the world of wrestling.

Everyone from the fans to wrestling news sites was speculating about it and were trying to come up with new theories every day. Judging by old footage, some even went on to say that he hooked up with The Rock for that one night and that he was going to make a one-off appearance on Smackdown especially when the Smackdown's 1000th episode was around the corner.

This story generated so much hype after just one promo and everyone was waiting for Tuesday to come so that English could finally raise curtains from this, but, unfortunately, the final outcome was underwhelming.

When Aiden showed the video, he strategically stopped it when Lana was saying to Aiden "I want you'' which left the WWE Universe wondering if Lana had been deceitful to Rusev or not. A week later, Lana and Rusev hacked into Aiden's system and played the rest of the video and Lana was just thanking Aiden for always having his husband's back. There were lots of continuity errors and plot holes in the story and fans didn't get the required result.

When Aiden and Rusev finally faced each other in a match, the latter easily defeated the former, and that was the end of the storyline. So much for investing in their feuds for weeks.

#3 Why did Nexus help Kane in burying The Undertaker?

Nexus helping Kane
Nexus helping Kane

Between trying to take over Monday Night Raw and helping their leader Wade Barrett become the WWE Champion, Nexus somehow found time to help Kane settle the long-running score with his brother.

The Undertaker was buried alive for the nth time and in the subsequent promos, The Nexus kept their motives close to their chest. We only got "things will soon become clear" from Barrett before the angle was dropped altogether and fans never got a decent explanation.

Since the rookies hated anyone and everyone who was marginally related to WWE like John Cena, Edge or Justin Roberts, the only logical reason can be that they saw Undertaker as another big wrestling figure and hence took it on their own hands to end him once and for all.

This angle had so much potential and we could have seen an eerie alliance between Kane and Nexus, but it never happened. Nexus has been long disbanded and most of their members are not even with the company right now, so don't expect to get a reason from WWE's side any time in the future.

#2 What is inside the McMahon Lockbox?

In February 2016, Shane McMahon returned to Raw and demanded that his father Vince McMahon let him run WWE's flagship show. His trump card was a secretive lockbox that he had held on to for years and if the secrets were revealed, some of Vince's darkest and deepest secrets would be exposed.

Considering what we already know about the WWE's chairman, it has to be something pretty big that Vince was willing to put his top TV show on the line to save him from embarrassment.

Vince gave Shane an opportunity to earn his place as Raw's General Manager by putting him in a match against The Undertaker. He lost that match after attempting an unsuccessful Leap of Faith off the top of the cell, but Vince still put him in charge of Raw, thus ending this whole storyline involving the lockbox.

The whole show was based around that storyline for months leading to Wrestlemania 32, but the management decided to end that abruptly and without giving the fans any logical conclusion.

Vince and Shane had solved their differences after that, so reasonably Shane does not have to unveil the content of the box, but judging by the time and interest that fans have invested in the story, they deserve to know the ending.

#1 Who was the Raw Anonymous General Manager?

“The RAW General Manager says, and I quote”

This angle ran for over a year before this Anonymous Raw General Manager's storyline was phased out in favor of Triple H and John Laurinaitis in 2011. Throughout its run, a laptop placed at ringside personified the anonymous GM, with Michael Cole conveying instructions. This whole storyline was intriguing and annoying at the same time.

Everyone, including the wrestlers, was curious to know about the man who was bossing them around on a weekly basis. He tried to make Edge's life a living hell by involving him in difficult matches and situations which ended with Edge losing his patience and destroying the laptop.

There were several other major storylines connected with this gimmick including the ones where Cena was being forced to join the Nexus and the whole feud involving Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler.

The gimmick was amazing initially and hit the right chords with the fans. Despite limited to being a laptop, it did some astonishing heel work and got the deserving heat from the crowd. But, when it was finally time to unveil the man behind the laptop, everything went south.

After all the build-up and hype that was created around the identity of the General Manager, Hornswoggle was revealed as the one, who was calling the shots in Raw for over a year. What started as a brilliantly executed gimmick ended up being a comedic scene and only raised one question - Why?
