Extreme Rules is the only night on the WWE pay-per-view calendar where the rules go out of the window. The majority of matches are contested with stipulations, with chairs being flung and tables breaking.

The event initially started in ECW as The One Night Stand pay-per-view in 2005. It was then turned into a WWE event and then into Extreme Rules.

There have been many memorable moments, but let's take a look at five of the most significant title changes from Extreme Rules.

#5 John Cena wins the WWE Title at Extreme Rules 2011

This particular title change at Extreme Rules was pretty significant in terms of booking moving forward. The previous month at WrestleMania, John Cena lost his WWE Championship opportunity against The Miz, thanks to the interference of guest host Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.

At Extreme Rules, John Cena was pitted against then-WWE Champion The Miz and John Morrison in a Triple Threat Steel Cage match. Following some shenanigans with R-Truth getting involved, John Cena managed to pick up the win. He finished The Miz using his famous Attitude Adjustment from the top rope to score a pinfall win.

In hindsight, the win was significant for several reasons. John Cena became an eight-time world champion. The Miz was no longer WWE Champion after an incredible run following winning the main event of WrestleMania. R-Truth got a slight push in the main event scene following this match.

Cena eventually lost the championship in the main event of Money in the Bank against CM Punk, following the famous pipebomb on Monday Night RAW, which sparked The Summer of Punk in WWE.

Looking back, you may think, 'Hey, John Cena just beat two guys in a cage match,' but in reality, there was a much bigger picture at play. It kicked off some notable feuds and storylines that will be remembered for a very long time.

#4 Layla win the Divas Championship at Extreme Rules 2012

At Extreme Rules in 2011, Layla defeated Michelle McCool in a no count-out, no disqualification 'loser leaves WWE' match. On the night, Layla won the match, but sadly she suffered a severe injury. She tore both her anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments and had to undergo surgery.

A year later, Nikki Bella was due to defend her Divas Championship against Beth Phoenix. Phoenix was not cleared to compete and former Diva Search winner Layla returned after a year's absence. Heroically, Layla defeated Nikki in just two minutes and forty-five seconds to capture the championship for the first time.

#3 CM Punk cashes-in Money in the Bank at Extreme Rules 2009

Jeff Hardy and Edge competed in a grueling Ladder Match in Extreme Rules 2009 for the World Heavyweight Championship. After a twenty-minute war, Hardy climbed the ladder to retrieve the gold in his specialty match.

Post-match, WWE announcer Jim Ross got in the ring to interview the new champion. Suddenly, CM Punk rushed to the ring with his Money in the Bank contract. It took the 'Second City Saint' two attempts to deliver his GTS finisher and capture the World Heavyweight Championship for the second time in his career. The moment left the WWE Universe stunned.

#2 Brock Lesnar cashes-in Money in the Bank at Extreme Rules 2019

In the main event of Extreme Rules 2019, Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch defended their respective Universal and RAW Women's Championship against Baron Corbin and Lacey Evans.

The champions managed to retain their titles after a hard-fought contest. However, Brock Lesnar entered the ring and cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Seth Rollins.

Two German suplexes and an F5 later, Brock Lesnar, stood tall as the brand-new Universal Champion. The Beast Incarnate was the top superstar again, much to the dismay of the WWE Universe.

#1 Christian wins the World Heavyweight Championship at Extreme Rules 2011

It was an emotional time for Christian in 2011. Following WrestleMania, his best friend Edge was forced to retire due to injury. The Rated-R Superstar relinquished his World Heavyweight Championship.

Captain Charisma picked up the baton, and a Ladder Match was set for the now vacant World Heavyweight Title. Christian battled Alberto Del Rio for twenty-one minutes.

Even after interference from Ricardo Rodriguez and Brodus Clay, Christian climbed the steps and became a world champion for the first time. It was a moment to savor. The baton had firmly been placed in Christian's hands, and it was finally his time.
