Over the years, we have been subjected to a mammoth number of WWE storylines. Some good, some bad, and some down right atrocious. Those that fall under the atrocious category often involve many romantic stories that have been devised by WWE's creative team.

Mandy Rose and Otis aside, there have been some very forgetful romances that the WWE Universe will happily pretend never happened. For some reason, WWE never quite hits when it comes to this side of their programming.

That being said, let's take a look at the five craziest romantic connections in WWE history.

#5. Dawn Marie & Al Wilson - WWE romantic storyline

Rewind to 2002 on SmackDown and the relationship between Dawn Marie and Torrie Wilson's real-life father, Al Wilson. Al, who is much older, was targeted by Dawn in the midst of a feud with the former Playboy cover girl, Torrie. The pair became affectionate, and it resulted in Al & Dawn becoming engaged.

Leading up to the wedding, Dawn invited Torrie to a hotel room, and promised to break off the engagement if she turned up. Torrie did so, with the footage being shown later, but the engagement continued.

The marriage took place on January 2, 2003 on SmackDown and went off without a hitch, although Dawn did make him marry her in just his underpants. Then sadly, whilst on their honeymoon, in the storyline, Al Wilson passed away due to "having rigorous sex numerous times in quick succession."

Torrie Wilson spoke to WWE.com in 2002 about the storyline:

"Actually, to be honest with you, when I was told by Paul Heyman the idea for the storyline, I thought it was a really good idea. I thought it makes her out to be such a good heel and gives her a lot to go on. This is all acting for me, and I know Dawn and I both come from an acting background. So we both know this is our job." Torrie Wilson said. (h/t twnpnews)

The week Torrie was due to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019, her father passed away in real-life. The now-fitness instructor paid tribute to him in her Hall of Fame speech, which received a rousing reception from the WWE Universe.

Overall, the storyline was controversial, outlandish and ridiculous on so many levels. It's a story WWE wouldn't be able to get away with today, that's for sure.

#4. Edge & Vickie Guerrero - WWE romantic couple

"Excuse me!?" Yes. This one did really happen. Edge and Vickie Guerrero became a WWE item in the mid-2000's. Edge was one of the leading stars on SmackDown and wanted to do all he could to remain at the top and be the world champion.

The romance lasted a number of months, with the Rated R Superstar reaping the rewards. Vickie had power on SmackDown at the time, due to Teddy Long's absence.

Eventually, the two married, but on their wedding day, Triple H had something up his sleeve. He shared a video of Edge cheating on Vickie with their wedding planner, Alicia Fox. Vickie, a woman scorned, reinstated The Undertaker, who she had banished from SmackDown, to face Edge inside Hell in a Cell.

In 2019, Vickie spoke with Wrestling With Reality about her delight working with Edge on the storyline:

"Absolutely, I love Adam [Edge] so much. We have been good friends for so long. He is another person who took me under his wing and taught me so much. He helped me learn wrestling moves so that I could use certain things at different times in the match for my character. I was honest with everyone and let them know I had no experience doing these things and everyone was so kind to me and helped guide me." Vickie Guerrero said. (h/t Fightful)

It was a storyline that dominated SmackDown for over half-a-year, and many in the WWE Universe were thankful when it was over.

#3. Teddy Long & Kristal Marshall - WWE romantic couple

A few months prior to the Edge-Vickie Guerrero WWE romance storyline, we saw then-Smackdown General Manager Teddy Long date Kristal Marshall. Long and Marshall first started dating in April 2007 and their romance developed over the course of the next few months. Long even handed more responsibilities to Vickie Guerrero to spend more time with her.

On the September 21, 2007 episode of WWE SmackDown, Teddy Long and Kristall were due to be married in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. After a number of distractions during the ceremony, Teddy was about to say "I do" when he collapsed. What was supposed to be a serious moment, came across comical as Teddy clutched his chest and immediately dropped to the ground.

Thankfully, the storyline never came to a true conclusion as Kristal Marshall left the company shortly afterwards. It probably saved us from some more crazy shenanigans. Teddy Long eventually returned to SmackDown as the Assistant General Manager to Vickie Guerrero.

#2. Kane & Lita - WWE romantic storyline

This is a storyline from 2004 the WWE Universe would love to erase from their memories. Kane was revealed to be the father of Lita's baby. At first, everyone believed it to be Matt Hardy's, who Lita was with at the time but Kane revealed he impregnated Lita to "continue his legacy."

Kane and Matt Hardy ended up having a "Til Death Do Us Part" match at SummerSlam that year, with Kane victorious, which at the same time meant he could marry Lita. The pair married as Matt Hardy tried to stop the ceremony. Hardy ended up being choke-slammed off the stage by Kane.

In September, as Lita continued her pregnancy, Kane faced the debuting Gene Snitsky on RAW. During the match, Lita was in the ring as Kane talked to her, Snitsky hit Kane in the back with a steel chair. This resulted in The Big Red Machine falling on top of Lita and the couple losing their baby.

Snitsky continued to taunt the pair, at one point even bringing a fake baby to the ring and kicking it into the crowd. Thankfully, the story ended when Snitsky defeated Kane at Taboo Tuesday, then sent Kane away for a few months after crushing his larynx with a steel chair.

#1. Kelly Kelly & Mike Knox - WWE romantic storyline

When WWE brought back ECW in 2006, there was a lot of fanfare about what direction this version of ECW would go. Of course, being under the WWE umbrella, there were a lot of things they couldn't do that were done in the original ECW.

One thing they did bring in was Kelly Kelly's Extreme Expose. Kelly was an exhibitionist and performed for the fans each and every week, removing her clothing. At the same time, we were introduced to Mike Knox, who was Kelly's jealous boyfriend who came out and covered her up every time.

Eventually, Kelly Kelly turned her attentions to CM Punk who she began to like, which in turn made for a mad Mike Knox. The couple eventually parted ways and Kelly went onto have a great career in WWE.
