5 major WWE reveals that let us down

It was me, Austin

Whether it comes in the form of a harrowing video, a vignette or a character on the show, the history of wrestling is littered with reveals that either enthralled us or repulsed us. On several instances, the stage was set, and the speculation ran rampant, but the surprise still blew people away. There have also been other occasions where the surprises just haven't worked out.

In this article, we look at five big WWE reveals that have let us down in the past. We start with the one that was the instigator for this piece.

#5 Jason Jordan is Angle's son

There is no question that this was a let-down
There is no question that this was a let-down

This may only be in the top 5 because it's so fresh in our minds, narrowly edging out the reveal of Rikishi being the person who ran over Stone Cold Steve Austin back in September 2000. This story built up for several months, with Corey Graves and Kurt Angle collectively teasing a bombshell revelation that would ruin Kurt Angle's career and reputation.

Many fans speculated on scenarios involving Dixie Carter, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. In the end, tag team mid-carder Jason Jordan was revealed as Kurt Angle's illegitimate son. The luke warm reaction in the arena was echoed by most of the viewers at home. It certainly was considered to be a very anti-climactic reveal by the vast majority of fans. Chad Gable, who was also speculated to be the candidate, would have made for a better choice.

#4 Mr McMahon's death and illegitimate son

In 2007, the WWE planned to make Mr Kennedy a huge star. The storyline oddly began with the death of Mr McMahon, who was storyline killed by an exploding limo. The conclusion of the story was set to reveal that McMahon had faked his death in order to leave the company to his illegitimate son, Mr Kennedy.

This would've led to a huge program between Triple H and Mr Kennedy. The storyline was quickly dropped following the double murder suicide of Chris Benoit, forcing Mr McMahon to appear on TV and address the matter.

Inexplicably, the WWE decided to continue with the "who's McMahon's son" portion of the storyline, and even more inexplicably, that son was revealed to be Hornswoggle. Mr Kennedy was removed from contention when his name showed up on the list of wrestlers associated with the 2007 signature pharmacy scandal.

#3 The Anonymous Raw General Manager

When Mr McMahon fired Bret Hart as GM in June 2010, the Hitman was actually replaced by a ringside laptop that made an SMS alert sound every time it wanted to get the attention of Michael Cole, who would read out its instructions.

It was only ever intriguing because the Anonymous Raw General Manager started using the catch phrases of ex-WWE superstars, leading to speculation over its identity. The angle was eventually phased out as Triple H took over Raw, followed by John Laurinaitis.

The angle was forgotten until Raw 1000 in 2012 when the computer randomly reappeared once again. Santino Marella decided to finally solve the mystery, with his investigation eventually leading him to reveal that it was...Hornswoggle. AGAIN!

#2 The Gobbledy Gooker

A bizarre idea concocted from the mind of Vince McMahon, the Gobbledy Gooker was unveiled at the 1990 Survivor Series. Even though 1990 was a very different time, promoting the hatching of a giant egg, only for it to be a man in a silly turkey suit was never a good idea.

Despite Gene Okerlund's attempt to sell it, coupled with Piper and Monsoon on commentary, there was no saving this abomination of an idea. Hector Guerrero, of the Guerrero wrestling family, was the unfortunate wrestler under the turkey suit.

To add to silliness, The Undertaker ironically debuted on the same night. Thank God he wasn't the one inside in the Egg. I am not sure The Undertaker would have had a 27-year run in the company if he was.

#1 The Higher Power

"It’s me, Austin! It was me all along, Austin!", these were the infamous words of one Vince McMahon when he revealed himself as the "Higher Power." The fact that the storyline ended with McMahon as the chief antagonist disappointed legions of fans who had speculated about the identity of the Higher Power for many weeks.

Despite seemingly turning babyface and joining forces with former arch rival Steve Austin, it was revealed that McMahon had actually colluded with The Undertaker to abduct his own daughter, Stephanie, simply to get the better of the Texas Rattlesnake.

It really was the most disappointing conclusion imaginable and a rare letdown from the ever popular Attitude Era. It was was simply a case of WWE overplaying a pat hand.
