The Survivor Series elimination match has allowed the event to stand out among the "Big Four" pay-per-views in WWE. The contest pits two teams of four or five against one another and goes on until one team has been completely eliminated. There have also been tag team elimination bouts in the past, with as many as 10 competitors on either side.

Through to the 2019 edition of Survivor Series, there have been 85 different Survivor Series elimination matches, with eight consisting of women stars.

With a rich history across the 33 previous shows, fans have witnessed some tremendous clashes in this speciality. From Wild Card bouts featuring faces and heels teaming, to contests with high stakes, the legacy of the match has certainly made its mark.

The speciality match has presented fascinating combinations and encounters between Hall of Fame talent. With the 34th annual event taking place tonight, let's take a look back at five must-watch Survivor Series elimination matches.

#5 Team RAW vs. Team SmackDown vs. Team NXT (Survivor Series 2019)

For the first time in the event's history, Survivor Series 2019 featured a five-on-five-on-five elimination match, with NXT joining the battle for brand supremacy.

Team RAW consisted of Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens, Randy Orton and Ricochet. Team SmackDown had Roman Reigns, Mustafa Ali, Shorty G, King Corbin and Braun Strowman. Finally, there was Team NXT with Damian Priest, Matt Riddle, Keith Lee, Tommaso Ciampa and WALTER.

With 15 of the company's best wrestlers in the ring, it was a fabulous spectacle that used the skill of all the competitors to create a suspenseful battle. The spotlight was set on particular stars throughout the contest, but it was Keith Lee who propelled himself to superstardom.

Lee's magnificent blend of speed, agility and power were put on display to astounding results. Keith pinned and eliminated Seth Rollins to put Team RAW away, which brought a showdown between him and Roman Reigns.

The chemistry between the two men brought a thrilling end to the high octane encounter. Although Team SmackDown won, Keith Lee elevated his stock exponentially.

#4 Team RAW vs. Team SmackDown (Survivor Series 2016)

At Survivor Series 2016, the marquee showdown in the battle of brand supremacy was the five-on-five elimination match. It was a bonafide who's who of top stars in the company at the time.

Team RAW were represented by WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens, United States Champion Roman Reigns, Chris Jericho, Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman.

Team SmackDown consisted of WWE Champion AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton and Commissioner Shane McMahon. The WWE Universe would witness a remarkable 53-minute bout.

The contest was layered with so many different stories, from the feuding Styles and Ambrose costing their team, to a memorable mini Shield reunion, to James Ellsworth helping to eliminate Braun Strowman.

In the conclusion, Randy Orton's quest to prove himself to Bray Wyatt and the Wyatt Family was completed, with an unlikely sacrifice that helped Bray pin Reigns to win for Team SmackDown.

This Survivor Series Elimination match is the longest-ever in length. It definitely delivered a tremendous level of in-ring work, mixed with enough notable moments to stand up to any previous encounter of its kind.

#3 Team Cena vs. Team Authority (Survivor Series 2014)

Stakes in Survivor Series elimination matches add so much and make them a lot more meaningful. The top three on this list all feature something on the line. At Survivor Series 2014, John Cena assembled a team to battle The Authority, with a win banishing Triple H's group from WWE.

Team Cena consisted of Dolph Ziggler, Big Show, Erick Rowan, and Ryback, while Team Authority was made up of Seth Rollins, Kane, WWE United States Champion Rusev, Intercontinental Champion Luke Harper, and Mark Henry.

Cena's squad would meet its biggest hurdle when Big Show turned heel, which led to the elimination of the Doctor of Thuganomics. The bout would come down to Ziggler facing a three-on-one disadvantage.

Dolph would use his cunning and superior wrestling ability to vanquish Harper and Kane, which left just Seth Rollins for Team Authority. It seemed like Ziggler had the victory sealed, but Triple H came in while the referee was down to hit the Pedigree.

Just when the Game placed Rollins over Dolph, the lights went out. In a shocking turn of events, Sting then made his debut in WWE at Survivor Series 2014.

The Icon confronted the Cerebral Assassin and laid him out with the Scorpion Death Drop. He then pulled Ziggler over Rollins, which led to the three count and a win for Team Cena, to force The Authority to leave WWE.

It was an emotional and suspenseful encounter that gave the fans a triumphant ending and surprise introduction of a legend into the company.

#2 Team Austin vs. Team Bischoff (Survivor Series 2003)

At Survivor Series 2003, the two General Managers of RAW put together teams to do battle, with the future of the brand in the balance. If Stone Cold's team won, Austin was able to once again physically assault anyone he liked on Monday nights. If Eric Bischoff's team was victorious, Stone Cold would be out as GM.

Team Austin was made up of Shawn Michaels, Booker T, WWE Intercontinental Champion Rob Van Dam, and WWE World Tag Team Champions The Dudley Boys.

Team Bischoff consisted of Chris Jericho, Christian, Mark Henry, Scott Steiner, and Randy Orton. It was a fabulous Survivor Series elimination battle which featured a spectacular performance from the Showstopper.

With the numbers disadvantage and wearing a crimson mask, Michaels put in an outstanding effort to help his former rival Stone Cold Steve Austin keep his job.

The Heartbreak Kid was able to even things up by leaving just Randy Orton on the opposing side. However, with the assistance of Batista, Orton was able to pull out the victory and win for Team Bischoff.

The post-match scenes. brought a passionate farewell for Austin. His team's loss and emotional embrace with Michaels was deeply deflating for the Dallas crowd. However, those fans had been thoroughly entertained for over 27 minutes with a stunning Survivor Series elimination match.

#1 Team WWF vs. Team Alliance (Survivor Series 2001)

There has never been a Survivor Series elimination match with more at stake than the "Winner Takes All" main event at the 2001 edition. In the conclusion to the Invasion angle, Team WWF went to battle against Team Alliance. The losing team would go out of business, so this could be viewed as the most important match in the company's history.

Team WWF consisted of WCW Champion The Rock, Chris Jericho, The Undertaker, Kane, and Big Show. Meanwhile, Team Alliance featured WWF Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Hardcore Champion Rob Van Dam, Booker T, and Shane McMahon.

There were a total of over 50 championship reigns among the collection of talent on show, making it the most star-studded Survivor Series elimination match ever.

For nearly 45 minutes, the 10 men battled in a truly amazing encounter that featured fantastic action and storytelling for the duration. After Angle betrayed Team Alliance, The Rock hit the Rock Bottom to defeat Stone Cold. It allowed Team WWF to win and due to the victory, The Alliance was finally no more.

The high stakes, Hall of Fame Superstars and superb wrestling makes this "the Best of the Best" when it comes to elimination matches. Team WWF vs. Team Alliance at Survivor Series 2001 is the most must-watch elimination match in WWE history.
