5 Reasons why Sasha Banks unexpectedly helped Bayley to retain her WWE SmackDown Women's Championship at WrestleMania 36

At the end of the day, friends will still remain friends

When the match was first announced by Paige, it just seemed like it was designed to be a showdown between Sasha and Bayley. And this is not a slight at any of the other women in the match, but because of how the women of WWE SmackDown have been booked.

Bayley has been the most dominant champion that the brand has known in quite some time, male or female, and it seemed like the only real challenger that she had was her own best friend, Sasha Banks. The only problem with the whole situation was that Sasha Banks and Bayley are the best of friends.

A miscue during the big WrestleMania match cost Sasha Banks her spot, and she got eliminated. And yet, she was involved in the final decision of the night where she returned to help Bayley out and help her retain her prized Championship.

So, now, the question on everyone's mind is why Sasha Banks and Bayley are on the same page after everything? Let me answer it with 5 solid points.

#5 Leading to a one-on-one match very soon

Sasha Banks and Bayley made magic when they were in NXT and they have continued to make magic after being called up to what is known as the 'main roster' of WWE since then, as well. Yes, this match planted the seeds of doubt about Sasha Banks, Bayley, and their friendship, but it wasn't the eventual payoff match for this feud, at all. I am certain that the payoff match will be much better.

I have interviewed both women and I know how committed they are to their craft. They will put all their time, their skill, and their resources into telling a compelling story that builds their feud. And then, they will go out there and crush it in a singles encounter.

#4 A betrayal wouldn't have established a clear babyface

Now, Sasha Banks is a heel and so is Bayley. For one to turn on the other would not have established either as a babyface, considering that it would be one heel betraying another.

This is a tricky situation that has to be booked in the correct manner so that the WWE Universe knows whom to root for when they get back in the arena. Of course, WWE has done many heel vs. heel matches in the past, but none of them have as much heat and as much passion from the crowd as matches where there are clearly defined heels and babyfaces.

John Cena and Bray Wyatt already confused us with the highly entertaining and enthralling Firefly Fun House match and the last thing that WWE would want at WrestleMania 36 is more confusion. No, a betrayal would not have established a clear babyface and a clear heel, which is why the decision was made backstage to have Sasha Banks help Bayley retain her Championship in her big title match.

#3 Lacey Evans is not ready to be Champion

One of the things that one must be cognizant of at all times is that when a babyface is pushed way too fast, the WWE Universe can rebel against WWE's creative process. We saw it with Roman Reigns when he was chosen to be Vince McMahon's golden boy and then we saw it with Seth Rollins too, soon after.

In fact, one can only hope and pray that WWE does not do the same with Drew McIntyre because the last thing you want is for the audience to turn on the face of the company. Lacey Evans is great, but her character of a Southern Belle is far too dated and I don't think it has the necessary edge to get over with the WWE Universe in 2020, in the same way as, say, Becky Lynch does.

So, if the match had ended with Sasha Banks betraying Bayley for Evans to become Champion, it would have probably been the wrong decision. Everything played out exactly in the manner that it should have.

#2 Far too many babyface moments on Night 2

Drew McIntyre and Brock Lesnar met in the main event of the night, and the Scottish Psychopath realized his dream of becoming the WWE Champion in front of no fans. Earlier on the night, Edge overcame his demons and destroyed Randy Orton in a match that went far too long. The Street Profits also retained their Championships, and Otis won the girl.

It was a night for the babyface, as WrestleMania usually tends to be, more often than not. I mean, you can bring up the fact that The Fiend won his match, but is he a heel really? And so did Charlotte Flair, and yes, while she may be the heel in this particular instance, I don't think she was a heel during her RAW run, at least.

WWE had to balance out the good guys winning with the bad guys, and that's why you had Sasha Banks come to Bayley's assistance to help her pick up the win, and to an extent, even protect Lacey Evans.

#1 A hook for the SmackDown after WrestleMania 36

Listen, if you think that this story is over and done with, then you are mistaken. It is clear as day that this is only the beginning of this angle, and it will stretch all the way through the summer months.

I mean imagine how cool it will be if Sasha Banks goes on to win the Money in the Bank briefcase and has her friend looking over her shoulder at all times, scared of her cashing the contract in. Imagine the cracks that would develop between these two friends and how a vigilant hooded Superstar could release footage that exposes their plans and their machinations.

And yes, whether it is Mustafa Ali, or whoever else, I think that it will be the 'leaker of footage' that eventually leads to one woman turning on the other. Sasha Banks refused to turn on Bayley but I don't know if Bayley will necessarily refuse to turn on her fellow role model, during the program.

And most importantly, this is a hook that will draw us to watch WWE SmackDown. At a time of declining TV ratings, this is quite necessary.
