The Money in the Bank pay-per-view is now an eagerly anticipated annual fixture on the WWE calendar.

The concept began in 2005, when the first-ever Money in the Bank Ladder Match took place at WrestleMania 21 in Los Angeles, CA, before becoming its own event in 2010.

The Money in the Bank Ladder Match is contested between a handful of superstars. The first to retrieve a contract suspended above the ring earns a World Title match anytime over the next 12 months.

In its 16-year history as a gimmick match and its 11-year history as a pay-per-view, it has brought some of the most exciting moments in recent WWE memory.

The cash-ins themselves are the most thrilling experience, and leave the WWE universe talking about them for months or even years.

Not all Money in the Bank matches go to plan for the competitors. Sometimes someone comes down to the ring to cause some interference, looking to make a name for themselves.

So, let's take a look at 5 Superstars that interfered in Money in the Bank.

#5 Matt Hardy

Matt Hardy is a Ladder Match specialist, along with his brother, Jeff. So it makes total sense that Matt would interfere in a Ladder Match that he's not competing in.

Hardy had been feuding with MVP throughout the latter stages of 2007 on SmackDown, and sustained a legitimate injury that ruled him out for a few months.

On screen, the story was told that MVP had injured Matt Hardy when he attacked him following their split as a tag team.

It was reported on WWE.com at the time that Matt Hardy had to have his appendix removed after it burst.

During his recovery, Matt made a brief appearance on Monday Night Raw supporting his brother Jeff, but it wasn't until WrestleMania 24 where he became physical once again.

Bursting through a sold-out crowd in Orlando, Florida, Matt made his way over the barricade and into the ring, preventing MVP from capturing the Money in the Bank briefcase.

Matt received a thunderous reception upon his return, but in true Matt Hardy fashion, he not only prevented MVP capturing the briefcase, but he delivered a twist-of-fate from the top of the ladder.

CM Punk went on to win that particular match, which would be the start of the rise for the Cult of Personality superstar.

#4 James Ellworth

At the Money in the Bank pay-per-view in 2017, we saw the first-ever Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

Announced by then SmackDown authority Shane McMahon, the groundbreaking match made shockwaves within professional wrestling, and continued WWE's women's evolution.

The match itself featured 'The Queen' Charlotte Flair, Natalya, Tamina, Becky Lynch and Carmella, who was accompanied by James Ellsworth.

The aforementioned James Ellsworth interfered in the match and caused quite the controversy within WWE storylines and online with the WWE Universe.

James Ellsworth climbed the ladder for Carmella and dropped the Money in the Bank briefcase into her arms and she was declared the winner.

Due to the nature of Carmella winning the briefcase, a Money in the Bank Ladder Match rematch took place on SmackDown, with Carmella winning the briefcase on her own this time around.

James Ellsworth, on the other hand, was banned from ringside and was eventually given a suspension and a fine for trying to interfere in the rematch.

#3 Elias

WWE had a difficult year in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, having to revert from arena shows to behind-closed-doors sets.

With that came innovation from WWE management, and they decided to reinvent the Money in the Bank ladder match slightly.

Rules changed for 2020, with the men's and women's matches taking place at the same time, with the briefcases suspended at the top of WWE Headquarters in Stamford, CT. Yes, you read that correctly.

Both matches started at the bottom of WWE Headquarters as the superstars fought their way to the top.

It was when they were scrambling at the top of the ladder that it was time to walk with Elias, as the guitar playing maestro appeared, whilst AJ Styles and Baron Corbin both unlocked the briefcase.

Elias hit them with the guitar, and the briefcase was fumbled down into the hands of Otis who became Mr Money in the Bank.

Elias had been feuding with Baron Corbin prior to the match, and it was only fitting he didn't allow the former 'King' the opportunity to capture the briefcase.

#2 Paul Heyman

The Messiah, the Father of ECW, the mad scientist, and everyone's favorite advocate, Paul Heyman.

You don't quite often associate controversy with Paul Heyman. Well, on a second thought, you do!

Money in the Bank in 2013 was no different, and may even have been one of Heyman's most shocking moments of all.

In Heyman's extreme home in Philadelphia, the stage was set with a Money in the Bank Ladder match to earn a contract for a shot at the WWE Championship.

The battleground featured Sheamus, Randy Orton, CM Punk, Christian, Rob Van Dam and Daniel Bryan. Quite the line-up.

During the latter stages of the match, Paul Heyman revealed himself as it looked as though he was coming out to help CM Punk.

But, during a moment whilst CM Punk was at the top of the ladder ready to retrieve the briefcase, the cunning Heyman proceeded to push the ladder and CM Punk off the top of it.

The arena was stunned in Philadelphia. Paul Heyman was CM Punk's long-time advocate. How could he do this?

Heyman explained the following night on Monday Night Raw that Punk couldn't beat Brock Lesnar, Heyman's other client, which resulted in a match between Punk and Lesnar at SummerSlam.

#1 Brock Lesnar

The Beast Incarnate captured his first Money in the Bank briefcase by outlasting seven other superstars, after adding himself to the match at the last minute.

Earlier in the night, Sami Zayn, who was scheduled to be in the match, was attacked backstage, leaving him unable to compete.

The competitors Andrade, Ali, Drew McIntyre, Finn Balor, Baron Corbin, Ricochet and Randy Orton started the match without an eighth entrant.

Then once all their bodies had been battered and bruised, Brock Lesnar's music hit and he came out, knocking Ali off the top of the ladder to retrieve the briefcase.

Lesnar, sitting at the top of the ladder after his victory, held up the briefcase (and what soon became his boombox) and laughed.

Brock was back and was ready to have some fun with his newly won briefcase.

He ended up cashing-in at Extreme Rules just a few months later, beating Seth Rollins to capture the Universal Championship, only to lose the title back to Rollins just 28 days later at SummerSlam.
