One Universal Championship reign is not enough for these WWE Superstars
One Universal Championship reign is not enough for these WWE Superstars

WWE unveiled the Universal Championship in 2016 as a result of the reintroduction of the brand split between RAW and SmackDown, where the blue brand won the rights to the WWE Championship.

Thus, RAW had to introduce a top men's title of its own. Then-General Manager Mick Foley and Commissioner Stephanie McMahon revealed the Universal Championship on the road to SummerSlam.

Since then, the title has changed hands a total of 14 times. Only eight superstars in the promotion have managed to ever claim the title. Out of these eight, five champions have not only managed to win the belt, but they have done so multiple times.

Our article will focus on these five superstars who have had multiple reigns with the Universal Title. Which superstars do you think can join these champions in the future? Share your valuable opinions in the comments below.

#5 in our list of WWE Superstars who have won the Universal Championship multiple times - Roman Reigns

The most recent superstar to claim the Universal title twice is Roman Reigns. He is also one of those champions who has won the title on both RAW and SmackDown.

The first time The Big Dog won the title was back in SummerSlam in 2018 as he squared off against his arch-rival Brock Lesnar.

A third superstar was waiting at ringside for the completion of the match. It was Braun Strowman, the then Mr. Money in The Bank, who vowed to cash in his briefcase on the victor of the match. His presence bothered Lesnar a lot. The Beast Incarnate's distraction towards Monster Among Men benefitted Roman Reigns to triumph in the contest.

Roughly two years later, Reigns battled The Fiend and Braun Strowman for the title that was then held by Fiend. He, however, didn't join the match until the other two superstars fell exhausted in the ring.

The Head of The Table then entered the match to start the monumental Universal Championship reign, which is yet to be halted as of now.

#4. The Fiend introduced the blue Universal belt and has won it twice

'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt challenged and defeated Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship at Crown Jewel in 2019. He took the title with him to Smackdown, where it is currently defended.

After losing the title to Goldberg, he halted his pursuit of the belt for a while. When the championship changed hands between Goldberg and Braun Strowman, he finally got his rematch at Payback in 2020.

He won the aforesaid match and became a two-time Universal Champion. However, his reign didn't last long, as he lost it to Roman Reigns a week later.

#3. Goldberg is a two-time Universal Champion

Goldberg returned to WWE in 2016 and soon inserted himself into the Universal Championship scenario. He squashed Kevin Owens for the title at Fastlane to become the champion. He then lost the title to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.

A similar story occurred in 2020 as well when he squashed The Fiend on the road to WrestleMania. He then lost the title to Braun Strowman at the Showcase of Immortals.

Two years later, the WCW legend has returned yet again to challenge Roman Reigns for the title on the road to WrestleMania. Only time will tell whether history will repeat itself.

#2. Seth Rollins defeated The Beast twice for two title reigns

Seth Rollins is the only superstar to win the Universal Championship twice by defeating the same individual, Brock Lesnar. Rollins won the 2019 edition of the Royal Rumble and challenged The Beast Incarnate.

The Architect stood tall in their clash at WrestleMania after a nasty low-blow. Lesnar took revenge by cashing in his Money in The Bank briefcase on Rollins.

Their skirmish came to a climax at SummerSlam when The Beast Slayer pinned down The Beast in clean fashion to become a two-time Universal Champion.

#1. Brock Lesnar is the only superstar to win the Universal Championship thrice

Like the World Heavyweight Championship is essentially attributed to Edge, Brock Lesnar is arguably the ultimate Universal Champion. He is the only superstar to claim the title thrice in his career.

His first reign started when he defeated Goldberg at WrestleMania 33. The reign was historical as it lasted roughly one and a half years. He was ultimately dethroned by Roman Reigns at SummerSlam in 2018.

After Reigns relinquished the title due to medical reasons, The Beast Incarnate defeated Braun Strowman to win the vacant title.

The third time he won the title was when he was Mr. Money in The Bank. He cashed in his briefcase on Seth Rollins at Extreme Rules to become the first-ever three-time Universal Champion.

Having won the 2022 Royal Rumble, Lesnar has challenged Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. It is just a matter of time until it is uncovered whether Lesnar will become a four-time champion.
