5 things fans might have forgotten about WWE Extreme Rules 2019

Extreme Rules 2019 was a massive show!
Extreme Rules 2019 was a massive show!

Extreme Rules has always been one of the most entertaining pay-per-views of WWE, thanks to the stipulations attached to some of its matches. Just like the name of the event suggests, many of the matches are held under Extreme Rules stipulations or involved the use of weapons during No Hold Barred matches, Street Fights, and No Disqualification matches.

Last year’s Extreme Rules was a huge event as no less than 13 matches were held during the night during the pre-show and main show. The RAW and SmackDown Women’s Championships were on the line during the night along with the men’s WWE and Universal Championships.

That wasn’t all, as the RAW and SmackDown Tag Team Championships were also defended during last year’s Extreme Rules, along with the WWE Cruiserweight Championship, Intercontinental Championship, and the United States Championship. The only title that was not defended was WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships.

The shortest scheduled match of the event ended in just about 15 seconds as Kevin Owens hit a Stunner on Dolph Ziggler as soon as the match started and pinned him clean.

In this article, we will remind our fans of 5 interesting things that happened during last year’s Extreme Rules before this year’s edition of the PPV.

#5 Shinsuke Nakamura became Intercontinental Champion on Extreme Rules pre-show

Two titles defended during the pre-show of the 2019 edition of Extreme Rules. WWE Cruiserweight Champion Drew Gulak successfully defended his title against Tony Nese.

However, the match in focus here is the one for the Intercontinental Championship. Finn Balor, who’d won the title at WrestleMania 35, put the Intercontinental Championship on the line against Shinsuke Nakamura.

The two Superstars had a good match in which Balor controlled most of the action. However, a missed Coup de Grace opportunity proved to be costly who lost the title after Nakamura knocked him out with a Kinshasa.

This allowed Nakamura to win the Intercontinental Championship during the pre-show and thus began his 201-day reign with the title.

This year at Extreme Rules, it is likely that Nakamura will team up with Cesaro to compete against The New Day for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.

#4 The Revival was the defending RAW Tag Team Champions at Extreme Rules 2019

The Revival was one of the best tag teams in NXT, but their move to the main roster didn't turn out to be great as expected. Even though Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder were great performers, they never got going after leaving the Black and Yellow brand.

During last year’s Extreme Rules, The Revival was the reigning RAW Tag Team Champions who defended their titles against The Usos. Dawson and Wilder showed a lot of heart during the match and in a contest that lasted over 12 minutes, they hit The Shatter Machine on Jimmy Uso to retain their titles.

This came as a pleasant surprise to the WWE Universe who believed that The Revival's reign would at Extreme Rules. Instead, The Revival lost the titles a couple of weeks later to Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson.

The duo was released from their WWE contract earlier this year and they recently made their debut for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) under a new name, FTR.

#3 The Undertaker and Roman Reigns defeated Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre at Extreme Rules 2019

The main show of Extreme Rules was arguably the biggest match of the night. The Undertaker teamed up with Roman Reigns for the first time to take on Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre in a No Holds Barred Match.

Elias was on McMahon and McIntyre’s side during the night and tried to run interferences to help the heels pick up the victory. We saw big spots during the match at Extreme Rules which included Shane performing a Diving Elbow Drop to The Deadman onto the announce table and later take him out with a Coast to Coast with a trashcan positioned. However, that wasn't enough to keep The Deadman.

Taker then took out Shane and Elias with Chokeslams while Reigns took care of McIntyre with a Spear. Taker finished off the match by performing the Tombstone Piledriver on Shane to end the match. After the match, Undertaker gave Reigns the nod of approval.

This match helped Undertaker redeem himself at Extreme Rules after a disappointing match against Goldberg at Super Showdown in 2019. While it seems like Undertaker has hung up his boots for good, Reigns and Shane are off television now. McIntyre, on the other hand, is currently the reigning WWE Champion after beating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36. Oh, how things change in just a year!

#2 Bayley retained the SmackDown Women’s Championship at Extreme Rules 2019

This year’s Extreme Rules will see SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley defend her title against Nikki Cross in a one-on-one match.

During the 2019 edition of Extreme Rules, Bayley defended the SmackDown Women’s Championship in a triple threat match against Cross and Alexa Bliss. At that time, Cross and Bliss were assigned to the RAW brand.

While Bayley had a tough time defending her title against the two best friends, she managed to counter the Twisted Bliss attempt and later hit Cross with a Diving Elbow to pick up the victory.

While Bayley lost the title later in the year to Charlotte Flair, it took her less than a week to win it back from The Queen.

This year, Cross is part of SmackDown and will be facing The Role Model on her own. On the other hand, Bayley’s best friend Sasha Banks will be challenging the RAW Women’s Champion Asuka for the title even though she is a part of the Blue brand.

#1 Brock Lesnar shocked the WWE Universe with his Money in the Bank cash-in at Extreme Rules 2019

The main event of the 2019 edition Extreme Rules saw a big Mixed Tag Team Match between the team of RAW Women's Champion Becky Lynch and Universal Champion Seth Rollins, and Lacey Evans and Baron Corbin in a 'Last Chance Winner Take All' Extreme Rules.

The stipulation stated that if any one of the Champions were pinned, the challengers would take home the respective titles. It was also Corbin and Evans' last chance at the titles for as long as Rollins and Lynch held the Championships.

The biggest spot of the match saw Corbin deliver the End of Days to Becky Lynch, which became an iconic spot.

While Corbin and Evans got several near-falls during the match, the End of Days to Lynch ignited a fire within Rollins, who unleashed on Corbin with a kendo stick and then delivered three Stomps to the heel to win the match.

While fans believed that the night was over, Brock Lesnar's music hit and The Beast made his way out to the middle with Paul Heyman. He cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Rollins and delivered a couple of German Suplexes before laying Rollins down with an F-5 and pinning him to win the title for a record third time.

This was also the first successful Money in the Bank cash-in for the Universal Championship and turned the entire RAW brand on its head within a few minutes at Extreme Rules.
