5 things WWE must accomplish at Extreme Rules

This Sunday night, WWE will be presenting its annual Extreme Rules PPV, featuring a card filled with stipulation bouts such as a Last Man Standing Match, an Extreme Rules match and more.

The main event will feature Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch teaming up to face Baron Corbin and Lacey Evans in a historic WWE match, as the bout will be contested under extreme rules, and will be a winner take all match. This means the winning team leaves with both the WWE Universal Title and the Raw Women's Title. Furthermore, should Lacey Evans and Baron Corbin lose the match, they will also lose the right to challenge for the titles again.

The PPV will also see the surprising return of The Undertaker, as he will team up with his WrestleMania opponent Roman Reigns to face the team of Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre.

With the PPV only days away, let's take a look at 5 things WWE must accomplish when this year's event is in the books.

#5 WWE needs to get "Extreeeeeme"

Paul Heyman
Paul Heyman

It may or may not be a coincidence that WWE promoted the father of Extreme, Paul Heyman, to the role of Raw's Executive Director just weeks before the Extreme Rules PPV.

No one backstage in WWE understands Extreme better than Paul Heyman, and with the ECW mastermind now in charge of Raw, Heyman needs to make this year's Raw matches on the Extreme Rules PPV something the event has been criticized for in the past - not being, well, extreme enough.

While the WWE Extreme Rules PPV has definitely provided some very extreme moments in the past, Paul Heyman has the opportunity to infuse this year's PPV with some good old fashioned ECW style edge, and take his first PPV as Executive Director of Raw to the next level.

With Heyman in charge of a Last Man Standing match featuring Braun Strowman and Bobby Lashley, and an intergender Tag Team Winner Take All match, contested under extreme rules, here's to hoping Heyman can provide fans with a few classic "oh my god" moments.

#4 The PG era needs to be declared WWE history

Bobby Lashley and Rey Mysterio

It was previously reported here at Sportskeeda that WWE intends to shift its programming focus to the teenage demographic, which will likely mean the usual PG oriented programming intended for children will slowly fall by the wayside.

With the above in mind, this Sunday night's Extreme Rules PPV is the perfect way to throw the baby in the deep end, so to speak, and show the WWE fans that things are changing in the company.

Attitudes of WWE stars such as Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins need to shed their bright-eyed, smily-faced babyface characters and walk a more risque line, while top heels in the company need to ditch the cowardly routine and get vicious.

This Sunday night's PPV has the potential to feature a milieu of violent offense, and WWE needs to demonstrate to its audience heading into the deal with FOX that it's not afraid to press some controversial entertainment buttons.

#3 Brock Lesnar needs to make his presence felt

Brock Lesnar

Mr. Money in the Bank, Brock Lesnar, has been scarce in WWE since making several regular appearances following his surprise Money in the Bank ladder match win.

While Lesnar has always worked a reduced schedule in WWE, and Paul Heyman keeps Lesnar's presence felt by cutting promos in The Beast's absence, it's time for Lesnar to make an appearance this Sunday night.

In the latest WWE NEWS, Brock Lesnar does not need to cash in his briefcase at the Extreme Rules PPV this weekend, but with a PPV aptly titled Extreme, which works in Lesnar's favor, he should make massive, physical statements in the form of punishment.

With Seth Rollins set to defend his Universal Title in a tag team match, and Kofi Kingston set to defend his title against Samoa Joe, it would be great to see Brock Lesnar lay waste to both Rollins and Kingston following their respective title bouts.

#2 The Undertaker needs to redeem himself

Allow me to use this space in order to offer my opinion on the debacle that was known as The Undertaker vs Goldberg at WWE Super ShowDown.

While WWE fans are quick to dismiss both in-ring veterans as too old to compete, and WWE NEWS will be quick to forget about the entire PPV altogether, I need to come to the defense of both 'Taker and Goldberg.

It was evident early on in the Super ShowDown match that Goldberg, who was wrestling in over 100 degree weather, accidentally, and severely, busted himself open, much to the detriment of the former WCW Champion and ultimately the match itself.

It is for the very reason that Goldberg was legitimately injured that I will give both he and The Undertaker a pass for their match in Saudi Arabia, and I applaud The Deadman for wanting to redeem himself so quickly.

This Sunday night, The Undertaker has the opportunity to remind people why he is called The Phenom, and test the waters for a possible singles showdown with Drew McIntyre at WWE SummerSlam.

#1 The women need to rival their competition, The Boss needs to return

Becky Lynch
Becky Lynch

This week's WWE Extreme Rules PPV might be headlined by an extreme rules, intergender tag team match, but the pro wrestling world is still reeling from the excellent Tessa Blanchard vs Sami Callihan bout at Sunday night's Impact Wrestling Slammiversary PPV.

The bout was not only great, but was a historic moment in pro wrestling as it proved a long argued point that women are more than capable of competing against the men. The post-match moment featuring Sami Callihan offering Blanchard a baseball bat was a reflection of the respect fans have for the kind of competition seen from Tessa Blanchard at the PPV.

Considering the above, it now rests on the shoulders of Becky Lynch and Lacey Evans to show the WWE Universe that they are capable of taking their extreme rules match to the next level.

On the Smackdown Live side of things, the Women's Title match featuring Bayley defending against Alexa Bliss will now be a two-on-one handicap match, pitting The Champ against both Bliss and Nikki Cross with the gold on the line.

With Nikki Cross challenging Bayley on Raw to find a friend as loyal as Alexa Bliss, Sunday night is the perfect time for Sasha Banks to make her long awaited return to WWE TV.
