5 times WWE left fans questioning reality

Can you believe Vince McMahon faked his own death on live television?
Can you believe Vince McMahon faked his own death on live television?

In the immortal words of both Queen and David, after leaving the dentist, "Is this real life?"

WWE has done a great job of making fans question reality over the years and, while they aren't always spot on in how they do it, there are still a lot of memorable moments where it actually worked. In fact, the company has sometimes gotten away with things like faking your own death, fighting for custody of your son and getting arrested just to name a few.

If nothing else, WWE has towed the line of reality and fiction for years, which is a part of what makes the product so enchanting to watch. It's honestly like nothing else on television and that's what helps set it apart. Furthermore, it helps create the "anything can happen" atmosphere that has made WWE the juggernaut it is today.

With WWE constantly pushing the line between reality and fiction, here are five times that the company made fans question reality. As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments below and be sure to tell us what made you question reality.

#5. Vince McMahon's limo blowing up

Vince McMahon faking his own death was nothing short of must watch television.
Vince McMahon faking his own death was nothing short of must watch television.

WWE has always been known for its edgy storytelling and nowhere is that more evident than the time Vince McMahon faked his own death to end an episode of Monday Night Raw.

The storyline was supposed to play out over several months and reveal that McMahon had another son, but it ended up being scrapped due to the real life Chris Benoit incident.

While the above mentioned incident derailed the storyline and forced the company to scrap most of it, watching a limousine implode on live television felt very real for a variety of fans. It also apparently looked so real that fans were calling the police from the arena and reporting that Vince McMahon was dead.

In the end, this storyline never reached its full potential, but it was still jaw-dropping to see it play out live. It was honestly one of those moments that will live on forever in WWE history. It made fans question reality for awhile, which was a part of what made it all so special

#4. Dominic's custody battle

WWE really went all out with this storyline between Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio.
WWE really went all out with this storyline between Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio.

While adults that watched WWE back in 2004 probably had a pretty good idea that Rey Mysterio wasn't really in danger of losing his son, Dominic to Eddie Guerrero, younger fans were enthralled in the ongoing custody battle. In fact, from the moment Guerrero threatened to reveal Mysterio's secret, to him shouting, "I'm your papi!", it was a thrill ride for WWE fans.

Not only was this due to the fact that a storyline like this was so personal and controversial, but also due to just how real it felt. Of course that was all just amazing storytelling on Mysterio, Guerrero and Dominik's part, but everyone's heart had to hurt when little Dominic asked Rey if he was really his dad.

Again, if you were older and in the know about what WWE was doing, you probably didn't glance twice at this storyline. It was a completely different story for younger fans that had no idea what was going on. Heck, kids probably went to school talking about a custody battle they was set to be resolved in a PPV pro wrestling match. Which is a thing that totally happens in real life.

In the end, it was just good storytelling and done in a way that made you question reality - if you were in the right age group. Either that, or you were able to suspend your disbelief long enough to think that the company would air this kind of content if it was real.

#3. Firefly funhouse match at WrestleMania 36

Bray Wyatt's Firefly Funhouse match was nothing short of pro wrestling nightmare fuel.
Bray Wyatt's Firefly Funhouse match was nothing short of pro wrestling nightmare fuel.

While there was absolutely nothing realistic about The Firefly funhouse match that took place at WrestleMania 36, the nightmare fueled trip that Bray Wyatt took fans - and John Cena - on was bizarre. It was also something that made WWE fans take a second look at one of the most decorated Superstars in WWE and see him for who he truly was.

John Cena versus Bray Wyatt was nothing short of a cinematic thrill ride that poked fun at many parts of The Cenation leader's history. It covered his humble beginnings of challenging Kurt Angle, his time as The Doctor of Thuganomics and the reign of terror he went on that ultimately held down so many Superstars.

If nothing else, it was a side of Cena's history that WWE was never very forthcoming about and to see it play out live was fascinating. It was almost as if the company was finally stripping away Cena's squeaky clean imagine and framing him as the locker room politician that he really was.

#2. CM Punk's original pipebomb

Who could forget CM Punk's original pipebomb on WWE?
Who could forget CM Punk's original pipebomb on WWE?

When CM Punk interrupted the main event between John Cena and R-Truth on the June 27th episode of Monday Night Raw, you almost knew something special was going to happen. You could feel the venom in the air around CM Punk, and that he was ready to tell The WWE Universe what was on his mind.

Then he sat down on the entrance ramp and cut what became known as the infamous pipebomb.

The promo spanned several minutes, broke the fourth wall several times and allowed Punk to air his grievances with WWE . He even took shots at several of his fellow Superstars, including Vince McMahon, The Rock, Hulk Hogan and Triple H.

As if that wasn't enough to make fans jaws just drop, he also started to tell a story about Vince McMahon being a bully, but was cut off. This lead Punk to yell that he was being silenced and that just seemed to get the crowd going nuts. It was the perfect blend of reality and fiction, which made it just so easy for fans to eat up.

#1. That one time Vince McMahon got arrested on television

Vince McMahon's mugshot will forever live in WWE history.

Vince McMahon just has a way of getting under people's skin and he did this brilliantly during the December 28th episode of Monday Night Raw. The episode started with a confrontation between McMahon and Roman Reigns , which escalated when McMahon started to make fun of Reign's family history in WWE.

The Big Dog tried to take the snide comments in stride and brush them off, but he eventually reached a breaking point with his boss. This lead him to push the seventy year old man right on his keister while the WWE Universe went nuts. McMahon tried to use the moment to prove how dangerous Reigns was and get him arrested, but the security guards that came out refused to do so.

This ultimately lead to McMahon picking a fight with police, putting his hands on an officer and finally being arrested himself. The moment was so real for some fans though that they actually called the police during the show to report that McMahon was being arrested. The company even later released what has become known as the creepiest mugshot ever on their website.
