WWE is excellent at creating unforgettable moments and this year was no different. 2020 will go down in history as one of the most memorable years in history, but for all of the wrong reasons. However, WWE was still able to produce weekly television and some unforgettable moments.

In March, the global pandemic caused the world to shut down and crowds were no longer allowed to attend events. The situation allowed WWE to experiment with how they did things. For example, "cinematic" matches have been used heavily throughout the year.

In this article, we will look at the five most unforgettable WWE moments that happened in 2020.

#5 Edge's shocking WWE Royal Rumble return

WWE's Royal Rumble is a much-loved event due to the unpredictable nature of the matches and surprise entrants. Fans count down along with the clock every three minutes waiting to see who will appear next.

This year's event was no different and featured one of the best and biggest surprises in its 33-year history.

The 21st entrant was next. With 10 seconds remaining on the clock, anticipation filled the air. The buzzer sounded and the familiar "you think you know me" rang out.

The crowd erupted as the unthinkable was taking place right in front of their eyes. The multi-time champion and wrestler who had to retire early because of life-threatening neck problems had made his emphatic return. Edge was back.

The return was as special for Edge as it was for the fans. The emotion and ecstasy etched on his face as the WWE Universe welcomed him back with open arms and deafening cheers will always be remembered.

On the April 11, 2011 episode of Monday Night RAW, Edge cut an emotional promo in which he spoke candidly about his neck injury.

The diagnosis was so severe that doctors would not clear him to wrestle in fear of paralysis and even death. A tearful Edge then announced his retirement and relinquished the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

The Royal Rumble match itself was a memorable experience, as Brock Lesnar dominated from the start and eliminated all who entered. That was before eventual-winner Drew McIntyre hit him with a Claymore over the top rope to a huge ovation.

However, the event will forever be remembered for the magnificent return of the "Rated-R Superstar" Edge.

#4 WrestleMania 36 at the WWE Performance Center

WrestleMania is WWE’s flagship event every year. It is The Show of Shows, The Grandest Stage of Them All, The Showcase of The Immortals. The spectacle attracts tens of thousands of fans from all over the world.

WrestleMania 36 was due to take place at the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Raymond Jay Stadium. The show was slated to have 90,000 fans in attendance. But, as the world became affected by COVID-19, it became ever so apparent that the show would not be going ahead as planned.

On March 16, WWE announced that the event would occur at the Performance Center with only essential personnel in attendance. Further changes followed as WWE revealed that the show was to take place over two nights.

The show was a visually jarring experience, but WWE had pulled out all of the stops to give it as much meaning as they could given the surroundings and circumstances.

The matches were great, and the wrestlers were clearly giving it their all to put on an entertaining show. Every punch, kick, and strike was wince-inducingly audible that heightened the action in the ring.

There two matches especially that stood out and were truly unforgettable. The first was AJ Styles vs. The Undertaker in the first-ever "Boneyard" match.

WWE filmed the match in a unique, grindhouse movie-style setting complete with soundtrack, explosions, and fight sequences. It was refreshing, expertly executed, and gave The Undertaker a fitting end to his phenomenal career.

The following night the WWE Universe was treated to another "cinematic" match. The FireFly Funhouse match between Bray Wyatt/The Fiend and John Cena was a masterful experience.

The "match" took the fans through a warped version of Cena's WWE career, which Wyatt exploited. He showed Cena the errors of his past, especially their match at WrestleMania XXX when Cena defeated Wyatt.

The match was a feast for the senses and a fantastic, psychological, and unforgettable WWE moment in 2020.

#3 WWE took things to the extreme

One positive thing to come out of the crowd-less shows has been WWE's ability to think outside the box and experiment with specific matches, storylines, and angles on their pay-per-views and television.

The first unforgettable and extreme moment took place at Money in the Bank. Both the men's and women's MITB matches happened simultaneously and fought under unique circumstances. The match emanated from WWE Headquarters in Samford, Connecticut. The competitors battled their way up to the roof where the briefcases awaited the winners.

The action throughout the building was fast, furious and lots of fun, but when it got to the top of the roof that's when things took a drastic turn. Baron Corbin would throw not only one but two WWE Superstars off the roof. Both Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black were mercilessly launched from the building into the darkness below. Luckily for Mysterio and Black, they survived only falling six feet and landing on a level below.

The second unforgettable extreme moment involved Mysterio again. At Extreme Rules, the Lucha Libre legend faced his tormentor, Seth Rollins in an "Eye for an Eye" match.

The stipulation was as crazy as the ending when Rollins forced Mysterio's head, eye first, into the corner of the steel ring steps. He popped Mysterio's left eye out of his head in the process.

The third and final unforgettable and extreme moment happened at the last WWE event of 2020, TLC. The ending of the Firefly Funhouse Inferno match between Randy Orton and The Fiend is a moment burned into the memories of all who witnessed it.

The conclusion of the match came when Orton hit an RKO on The Fiend who was on fire. As The Fiend lay motionless, the flames died out and "The Viper" did the unthinkable. Orton poured a can of gasoline over The Fiend before throwing a lit match upon him engulfed Bray Wyatt's alter-ego in ferocious flames.

The moment was beyond extreme and unforgettable in its madness.

At WWE Money in the Bank, Asuka climbed to the top of the ladder on WWE headquarters' roof to become the third Mrs. Money in the Bank.

The following night on Monday Night RAW, Becky Lynch came to the ring with the briefcase. "The Man" introduced Asuka to the ring before going to explain the briefcase did not contain a contract for an instant title shot, but the title itself. "The Empress of Tomorrow" was now champion. Asuka danced around the ring as she celebrated the news.

Lynch then revealed that she would be leaving to become a mother. The announcement stopped Asuka in her tracks and in a truly wonderful and heart-warming moment, they embraced. Asuka's genuine surprise and joy at the news made this a special and unforgettable moment in 2020.

On December 11, Lynch took to Instagram to announce that Roux had arrived. The picture showed both Lynch and Rollins holding the tiny hand of their brand new baby.

Becky Lynch is expected to return to WWE in 2021.

"The Big Dog" Roman Reigns made his shocking return to WWE at SummerSlam this August. At the end of the main event between The Fiend and Braun Strowman, Reigns came out of nowhere and destroyed them with a new, angrier, take-no-prisoners attitude. Reigns was back and better than ever. He was bigger, stronger, faster, and way more menacing.

In the following weeks, a stoic and stern Reigns employed Paul Heyman's services before winning the WWE Universal Championship in a three-way match with The Fiend and Strowman at Payback.

His feud with his cousin Jey Uso has been nothing but Oscar-worthy as the "Tribal Chief" Reigns' character and promo work has been exceptional.

Reigns has not only revitalized and revolutionized his career, but he has elevated all those that surround him, as Jey Uso has been in and around the main event.

Paul Heyman has added a new and exciting addition to his character, Drew McIntyre looked every bit Reigns' equal. Kevin Owens has recently propelled to the top of SmackDown after months of being lost on the blue brand.

Roman Reigns' explosive return to WWE after a six-month hiatus was an unforgettable moment in its own right. But what has followed since the "Tribal Chief's" comeback is even more so.
