WWE presents their annual Hell in Cell pay-per-view event this weekend. The event has become a staple of the WWE pay-per-view calendar since its inception in 2009.

The event features the iconic Hell in a Cell match with several matches taking place inside the sinister structure. The first ever Hell in a Cell match took place at In Your House: Bad Blood in 1997.

The event saw The Undertaker square off against Shawn Michaels in a match that is fondly remembered for the debut of The Undertaker's long-lost baby brother Kane.

Since then, 45 Hell in a Cell matches have taken place in WWE. Several of these matches have seen various WWE Superstars escape to the outside of the structure and climb up to the roof of the cell. This has subsequently led to various superstars falling or being thrown off the Hell in a Cell structure to catastrophic outcomes.

With that in mind, let's take a closer look at five WWE Superstars who were thrown/have fallen off the Hell in a Cell structure.

#5 Shawn Michaels - WWE In Your House: Bad Blood 1997 vs. The Undertaker (Hell in a Cell match)

The first ever Hell in a Cell match in WWE took place in the main event of the In Your House: Bad Blood pay-per-view event in 1997.

WWE icons The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels squared off in one of the greatest matches in WWE history. As per the pre-match stipulation, the winner of the match would become the number one contender for the WWE Championship, challenging then-champion Bret Hart at Survivor Series 1997.

The match largely saw The Deadman brutalizing the smaller Michaels, violently utilizing weapons such as steel chairs and the Hell in a Cell structure to his advantage.

During the latter stages of the match, both Michaels and The Undertaker were able to escape the cell and brawl through the ringside area. This led to both competitors climbing to the roof of the Hell in a Cell.

Attempting to run away from his opponent, Shawn Michaels attempted to climb down one side of the Cell. Unfortunately for The Heartbreak Kid, he was caught by The Phenom. The Undertaker hit Michaels with a barrage of punches. Shawn Michaels then fell off the cell structure and crashed through the announcers' table at ringside.

#4 Drew McIntyre - WWE Hell in a Cell 2020 vs. Randy Orton

WWE Hell in a Cell 2020 saw Drew McIntyre enter a Hell in a Cell match for the first time in his career.

The Scottish Warrior squared off against long-time rival Randy Orton in the show's main event, putting his WWE Championship on the line. McIntyre already owned two previous victories over The Viper at SummerSlam and Clash of Champions respectively.

However, in this match, Randy Orton got the jump on his opponent before the opening bell could even be rung. The Apex Predator disguised himself as a cameraman and attacked Drew McIntyre during his entrance.

During the latter stages of the match, Orton utilized bolt cutters to cut the chain off the cell door, allowing him to escape. This led to both competitors brawling inside the WWE ThunderDome, eventually scaling the Hell in a Cell structure onto the roof.

After Randy Orton attacked Drew McIntyre with a lead pipe, both competitors attempted to climb down the Cell structure. Instead, The Viper sent Drew McIntrye flying off the Cell and crashing through the announce table below.

#3 Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose - WWE Hell in a Cell 2014

WWE Hell in a Cell 2014 saw Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose's first matches inside The Devil's Playground respectively.

The former Shield teammates had been feuding for several months on WWE television. This all stemmed from Rollins turning his back on Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns, disbanding The Shield in the process.

The brothers-turned-enemies looked to finally settle their feud inside Hell in a Cell. But before the match could even begin, Dean Ambrose scaled the Hell in a Cell structure during his entrance.

After being distracted by Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury, Ambrose was attacked on top of the cell by Seth Rollins, who had sneakily climbed up from the opposite side.

Both WWE Superstars continued to attack each other while perched on the side of the cell. Eventually, they both fell off the structure and crashed through two announcers' tables at ringside.

Rollins and Ambrose were both placed onto stretchers at ringside by medical personnel. However, Ambrose recovered and continued to attack his former Shield partner.

This led to both participants entering the Hell in a Cell structure and the match officially beginning.

#2 Rikishi - WWE Armageddon 2000 vs. The Undertaker, Kurt Angle, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and Triple H

WWE Armageddon 2000 saw the largest Hell in a Cell match in WWE history. Kurt Angle defended his WWE Championship against five other WWE Superstars in an incredible and violent main event.

The Olympic Gold medalist successfully defended his WWE Championship against The Undertaker, The Rock, Rikishi, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H inside The Devil's Playground.

However, the match is perhaps best remembered for The Undertaker throwing the nearly 400lb Rikishi off the Hell in a Cell structure and onto a truck at ringside.

During the opening stages of the match, WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon and his stooges, Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco attempted to demolish the Hell in a Cell structure, effectively ending the match.

McMahon, Patterson and Brisco drove a truck filled to ringside and attempted to cause the Cell to collapse. They successfully ripped the Cell door off its hinges.

However, WWE Commissioner Mick Foley put a stop to this by sending local police to escort Mr. McMahon out of the arena. He also attacked both Brisco and Patterson himself.

Due to the missing cell door, the action between all six WWE Superstars quickly spilled outside of the Hell in a Cell structure. This led to The Undertaker and Rikishi brawling on top of the Hell in a Cell roof.

The Deadman followed this by chokeslamming Rikishi into the truck at ringside.

#1 Mick Foley - WWE King of the Ring 1998 vs. The Undertaker

WWE King of the Ring 1998 presented one of the most iconic and terrifying moments in professional wrestling history.

At the event, The Undertaker squared off against Mankind in only the third ever Hell in a Cell match. While not the main event, the match is certainly the most famous Hell in a Cell match in WWE history.

The match is famous/infamous due to the punishment sustained by Mankind (Mick Foley) during the bout.

While making his entrance, Mankind scaled the Hell in a Cell structure, tossing up a steel chair in the process. Mankind was then quickly met by The Undertaker on top of the structure. After a brief period of brawling, The Undertaker tossed Mankind from the top onto the Spanish announcers' table at ringside.

The spot is one of the most famous, iconic and shocking moments in WWE history. Jim Ross' iconic call of "Good God almighty, it killed him! As God as my witness, he is broken in half," is still one of the most quoted lines in professional wrestling history.

After seemingly being stretchered out of the arena, Mick Foley refused medical attention and made his way back. Mankind was able to continue the match and once again scaled the Hell in a Cell structure, meeting The Undertaker on the roof.

The Undertaker then chokeslammed Mankind through the cell roof, sending him crashing into the ring. The spot was not meant to be executed in that manner as the roof legitimately broke, causing Mick Foley to fall into the ring in an unplanned spot.

Despite being thrown off the Hell in a Cell structure twice in one match, Mankind was still somehow able to finish the match.
