WWE Summerslam 2014: The Cena-Lesnar main event has tough footsteps to follow

Hope they live up to the expectations

WWE has had a pretty eventful week. Hogan’s birthday, Del Rio getting fired , the build up to Summerslam and if you thought that John Cena has been shoved down everyone’s throat then so is the price of the WWE Network which, as it is it’s catchphrase, for “$9.99 only”

Talking about Summerslam, the Creative has done a really good job of making everyone know what the match card is going to be. None has had a stellar build up as the main event featuring Lesnar and Heyman against Cena. The build up has been stellar particularly because of the performances of Heyman and Cena and Lesnar has been consistently reliable with just his mere presence.

Ever since the disastrous burying of the Nexus Storyline which happened in the main event of Summerslam 2010 where they faced Team WWE, the main events after the 2010 edition have been great.

The matches that happened were Cena Vs Punk during the Summer of Punk to have an undisputed WWE champion, Triple H versus Brock Lesnar which featured a very MMA-like introduction, Cena versus Bryan where Bryan won only to trigger the beginning of the Authority storyline and now expectations are quite high for the Beast Incarnate to face the former Dr. of Thuganomics.

Here’s looking at what the main event of this year has to follow upon

Punk-Cena Part 2

This was the second match in the main event of a PPV ever since Punk broke the fourth wall and gave his famous promo. Ever since that day, the rivalry between Cena and Punk has become legendary, atleast for this era.

Punk was the first person to ever really challenge Cena’s supremacy. Every superstar in the WWE who’s ever been called a great, has had atleast one memorable rivalry. Stone Cold had Vince Mcmahon and Rock, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels had each other, Hogan had Warrior and Macho Man, and Cena finally got Punk.

This was a feud which was successful in bringing back some of the fans who had been frustrated by the product. Triple H added himself in the match in the capacity of a referee. The best moment he had in the match was when Punk and Cena were on the verge of getting counted out but the COO decided to throw them back into the ring. The mistake made by Triple H in the end did deprive the hardcore fans from witnessing a clean win over Cena but that could not overpower the sheer entertaining performances put forth by both the superstars

Cena-Bryan 2014

The main event from last year was just spectacular. It not only legitimized Bryan’s rising popularity but also was witness to a rare clean loss from Cena. Their match was not only one of the best Summerslam main event but one of the best in recent history. Cena, again, rose to the occasion. This just goes on to prove that Cena is a better worker than he is made out to be. The list of superstars who can actually make Cena look less than invincible is a select, elite list.

At Summerslam, Bryan made it to that list.

And now, Cena is in another main event. Again as the champ.

And Lesnar is a superstar from that select, elite list. The only difference between Lesnar and others on that list is that Lesnar became a bigger star way before Cena did and it is arguable if Cena could ever have reached where he is now if Lesnar had stayed back with the WWE.

Countdown to Summerslam begins.
