WWE Video: AJ Styles' reaction to the Great Balls of Fire PPV

Styles was taken aback upon hearing the name Great Balls of Fire.

What’s the story?

In a recent interview with InsideTheRopes, AJ Styles gave his take on the controversial Great Balls of Fire PPV event that will take place this July.

Styles was probed by the interviewer about the aforementioned PPV, which led him to create an analogy, associating the name of the event with pianos and the song ‘Great Balls of Fire’.

In case you didn’t know...

‘Great Balls of Fire’ is a song that was recorded in 1957 by Jerry Lee Lewis, written by Otis Blackwell and Jack Hammer – widely considered one of the most popular of that era. The name of the 1989 biopic on Lewis, played by Dennis Quaid, is also based on the aforementioned song.

The heart of the matter

As we had previously reported, the WWE has confirmed that its upcoming RAW-brand-exclusive PPV event will, in fact, be called Great Balls of Fire. Ever since the WWE released said confirmation, the professional wrestling world has had a multitude of different reactions to the uniquely named event – ranging from laughter, anger to outright disapproval.

When asked for his thoughts on the event’s controversial name, Styles seemed to be a tad surprised and apparently wasn’t aware that the WWE even had an upcoming event of said name. Fans can check out his reaction in the video below:

“Do we really have a pay-per-view called Great Balls of Fire? Wow! Is there gonna be a piano, like pianos everywhere? Is there gonna be a Hardcore Match with pianos? (Because) that’s all I can think of…pianos, when I hear Great Balls of Fire. That’s what I’m saying (in reference to the song).”

Furthermore, when probed about having prominently featured on SmackDown Live’s first main show TV taping in Scotland last year, Styles praised the Scottish fans reiterating that the crowd was great, and asserted that the WWE Superstars are just as happy to see the fans as the latter are to see their favourite pro-wrestlers.

What’s next?

WWE Great Balls of Fire takes place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on July 9th. AJ Styles will not compete at the event since it will be brand-exclusive to RAW, and Styles is presently contracted to WWE SmackDown.

Author’s take

In my opinion, the WWE higher-ups and Vince McMahon in particular, have played a masterstroke by changing their July PPV event’s name from Bad Blood to Great Balls of Fire.

This may sound a bit absurd but hear me out. It’s no secret that the WWE’s viewership and attendance figures experience a dull phase in the post-Wrestlemania season, and it’s controversies like ahem…Great Balls of Fire, that help the company keep drawing publicity and attention toward its product.

Love him or hate him, Vince McMahon is a genius!
