Why unifying the titles would be a suicidal move by WWE

Self destruct mode: On

In the current situation, an eleven year old who has the experience of playing Total Extreme Wrestling could make a better booking compared to what is going at the WWE.

A decade ago, the company boasted some excellent star power and intriguing storylines that kept the fans in the edge of their seat even on Monday night Raw. And fast forward to the present, they have plummeted to such unexplainable depths in which their prestigious pay-per-view Survivor Series has been labeled as trash by the WWE Universe.

Self destruct mode: On

And all of a sudden in what seems to be an attempt to save their face, the company has come up with an “excellent” idea in which they are planning to make B Grade PPVs and Raw look like it’s something bigger as WrestleMania. The WCW like booking in recent times saw some PPV quality matches in Raw and the latest addition to their master plan has been a teased unification of the WWE and World Heavyweight Championship.

Some might be wondering why TLC will boast such a big match since it hasn’t been up there when the fans vote for their favorites. But then again the Authority is yet to confirm that it will be a unification match and that means we could see TLC conclude with one wrestler holding both the titles. I sure hope it’s not John Cena, because being God is the only gimmick greater than his current one.

So looking on the other side of matters, What if the unification actually takes place at TLC or in the near future? The answer will be quite simple; the WWE is digging its own grave.

To start with, in the current booking strategy of the company, the fans get to a maximum of three major storylines. From that three, two of them will be concentrated around the two main titles and one would be something revolving around some top star. Meanwhile, the rest of the wrestlers would be seen smashing eachother for apparently no reason. And that itself makes the crowd go mad, now think about the situation of taking away one potential storyline from the only three. Better watch the emotionless Bella in Twilight.

The second aspect that will be affected massively is the sheer amount of talent that the WWE possesses. Compared to other promotions like TNA or ROH, WWE has the most talented and resourceful roster in the business. Ever since the brand split of the company went out of the window, the World Heavyweight Championship lost its charm.

I mean a title which was fought in the WrestleMania main event between Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Chris Benoit was overshadowed by the WWE title because of the bad booking of the company. But, going back to the roster, the title was transformed into a pushing ground for Wrestlers who weren’t up there to hold the WWE Championship. Upper midcard stars like Alberto Del Rio and Dolph Ziggler got a taste of gold with the Heavyweight championship and was projected as credible stars in front of the fans.

Taking one title out of the equation will leave the upper card stars with not much do around than kicking eachother for the sake of “entertainment”. They will be booked in hollow matches which would only serve the purpose of present stimulation.

One might argue that there aren’t enough A list stars in the company to compete for two titles like the olden days. But as long as the Intercontinental Championship and United Championship are treated as the Divas title, the B list stars wouldn’t be anywhere near fulfilling their potential without a second important title.

Though we were made to believe that, the WWE was going to give some importance to the World Heavyweight Championship by giving it to John Cena, it turns out that the company once again let the fans down with their new announcement.

To sum up, the WWE will be hitting a self-destruct mode if they decide to unify the title, simply because of their enormous roster and extremely poor booking without storylines. It would be a good time for them to realize that the fans are still hanging in there only because of the rich history that the company has.
