WWE Day 1: 5 Mistakes that were made - Underwhelming victory, missed opportunity

WWE missed several opportunities and made a number of mistakes at Day 1
WWE missed several opportunities and made a number of mistakes at Day 1

WWE Day 1 was the company's perfect opportunity to kick off the new year in style, but there were several obstacles that they were forced to overcome.

Roman Reigns' match being canceled at the eleventh hour and Brock Lesnar being added to the WWE Championship match could have been handled differently.

It could be argued that there was only ever one winner after Lesnar was added to the match and now The Beast Incarnate will be part of Monday Night RAW moving forward.

There were several moments last night that could have been handled better and here are just five mistakes that were made.

#5. Does Edge's victory over The Miz at WWE Day 1 make him look weak

The WWE Universe has been pushing for Beth Phoenix to make her return to the company over the past few weeks. The former Women's Champion was able to help Edge to overcome the threat of The Miz and Maryse last night at Day 1, but does it make it seem as though The Rated R Superstar was unable to win without his wife?

Maryse's interference was enough to help The Miz to deliver the Skull Crushing Finale before Phoenix ensured that the former Divas Champion was no longer an issue. She could have just helped to get rid of Maryse, but instead, she remained at ringside and distracted The Miz, which then led to him taking a spear and losing the match.

Many fans believe that this was a cheap end to the match since Edge didn't need the same kind of help that Maryse did. Having Phoenix help Edge in this way was no better than Maryse slapping The Rated R Superstar earlier in the match.

This does open up a number of possibilities for the couple in WWE moving forward, but Edge should have been allowed to finish the match on his own.

Becky Lynch has now teased that there could be another match for the couple in the near future, so hopefully, Phoenix sticks around for a while.

#4. Perfect Opportunity for a Randy Orton heel turn was missed by WWE

The Street Profits were defeated by RKBro last night at WWE Day 1, in what could have been the perfect moment for the duo to go their separate ways.

RKBro have a unique chemistry and last night Migos were on-hand and could have even become part of a heel turn to bring back The Viper.

Brock Lesnar is now the WWE Champion on RAW and Randy Orton is still in a tag team storyline with Riddle. The former 14-time World Champion was in a Tag Team Championship match at WWE Day 1 rather than being part of a fatal five-way match that would take him one step closer to breaking the all-time record.

There's no question about Orton being held back by Riddle at this point. If Lesnar is going to be the main champion on RAW, then Orton has to step up. SummerSlam 2016 will still be fresh in his mind if he comes across The Beast on RAW in the coming weeks.

#3. The Usos could have lost the Championships to The New Day at WWE Day 1 to prove that they can't get the job done without Roman Reigns

The Usos were part of last night's WWE Day 1 event despite Roman Reigns' recent issues with COVID-19. The duo were able to successfully defend their SmackDown Tag Team Championships against The New Day in what was easily the highlight of the show.

This could be seen as a huge missed opportunity from WWE since the story for several weeks has been about The Usos needing Roman Reigns and vice versa. With The Head of the Table out of action for several weeks, the duo could have lost their Championships to The New Day before then going on a quest to win them back before he made his return.

This could cause tension in The Bloodline and make for much more entertaining viewing in the coming weeks as WWE scrambles to cover for the absence of The Tribal Chief. As of writing, it's unknown when Reigns will be cleared to make his return to WWE.

#2. It was Liv Morgan's time to become WWE RAW Women's Champion at Day 1

Liv Morgan challenged Becky Lynch for the RAW Women's Championship at WWE Day 1 last night but the former NXT star came up short.

It appears that the finish of the match should have been different and Lynch should have cheated to win in order to set up another match between the two women, but this wasn't the case.

Morgan had the match of her life last night and still came up short in her quest to lift her first WWE Championship after she was pinned clean by Big Time Becks, who arguably struggled with the challenge.

Morgan has shown signs of improvement over the past few months and her move over to RAW has been one of the biggest successes of her career.

Last night was the perfect opportunity for WWE to hand the title to Morgan, but instead Lynch retained and now this feud will either be dragged out at The Royal Rumble or Liv will have missed her chance.

#1. Brock Lesnar dominates WWE Championship match, leaves with the title

Brock Lesnar wasn't originally supposed to be part of the WWE Championship match last night at WWE Day 1, but he was still able to walk away with the title.

The Beast was added to the match when his bout with Roman Reigns was canceled and it appears the company made a last-minute decision to hand him the Championship.

Lesnar will now be forced to head over to RAW since he has their Championship and could finally step into a feud with Lashley. The issue here is that Roman Reigns will make his return to the company in a few weeks' time and the feud with Brock Lesnar will need some kind of conclusion.

Has WWE booked themselves into a corner by handing Lesnar a Championship and expecting him to switch brands in the middle of a feud? It will be interesting to see how the company is able to move this storyline forward on both brands heading into The Royal Rumble later this month.
