WWE: Future of the WWE – Legends’ pick

Time moves on and so does the industry. All the current crop of stars will soon lead way to the younger generation, just like the older generation has. The torch has been passed for decades, from the Blassies to Sammartinos to the Flairs and Hogans, to the Bret Harts and now, the Cenas. Sooner or later, there will be a crop of hungry, enthusiastic performers who will take the baton from the Cenas and Punks, and will run with it. Professional wrestling is one industry where the names don’t matter as much as the organization, as every performer can, was and will be replaced. Although we see the legends come back and perform once in a while, the industry will not be stuck in time for anyone. Even though guys like Hulk Hogan refuse to get out of the lime light, the industry will move on, and that’s how an organization survives.

In the WWE, for the past 2 decades, we’ve seen some of the greatest performers step inside the squared circle. Not only that, but we’ve witnessed the best period in professional wrestling history, the Attitude Era in the WWF and the Monday Night Wars. Attitude Era was one period which focused on creating large number of superstars, and that made it possible for the WWF to not depend on one single name, but use the diverse pool of superstars. About a decade and a half later, that seems to be missing from the current WWE, and the product has become abysmal because of that. With the WWE depending solely on John Cena, and refusing to create any more stars, the show has become watered down and stale. But in recent months, two certain legends in the WWE came back and made sure to put over two superstars, who can now be seen as the future of the business.

When the Undertaker came back in February, the fans imagined he would just compete at WrestleMania and disappear for the rest of the year. But to everyone’s surprise, The Undertaker made appearances on shows after WrestleMania, and the reason was simple; he came back to create a new star. The Internet Wrestling Community (or IWC) loves Dean Ambrose, and everyone who has good vision can see that he is the future of the company and the business, and even the WWE realized that. With The Shield having one of the best storylines and matches in recent memory, The Undertaker was soon involved in a feud against The Shield. The Undertaker made his return to in – ring competition on RAW after 3 long years to take on The Shield! But there was one person who was made to gain the most from this, and that was Dean Ambrose.

Dean Ambrose faced The Undertaker on Smackdown!, which would have been a huge honor for Dean. Undertaker wrestled a match on Smackdown! after a long time, and it was against a guy who came to the main roster merely some months ago. And what more? Ambrose and his colleagues decimated The Undertaker after the match, and put the Deadman down to stamp their dominance in the company. It was obvious from this match that the WWE wants to put over Dean Ambrose, and make him the future star of the company, and that is a wise choice by the management. Not only is Dean one of the best heels in the company, but he is phenomenal in the ring and is one of the best talkers in the business. Although he has been on the main roster for only a few months, many pundits like JBL have already prophesied him to be the future of the company!

The next such veteran is none other than the COO of the WWE, Triple H. The background to the superstar Triple H decided to ‘put over’ in his own way is interesting. Anyone who had the fortune of witnessing Mr. Perfect would know the enormous talent he possessed. Being the son of such a reputed legend is not an easy burden to bear, and Joe Hennig found that out first hand. Although he tried his luck on the main roster, being a part of the reformed Nexus, he was soon sent back to the developmental to work on his persona. Joe is one of the most talented individuals inside the ring, but he needed to have a strong character and a good mouth piece, as he wasn’t exactly the best talker in the business, and guys ranging from The Rock to Triple H himself praised Joe and wanted to see him raise his game, and make a name for himself in the business.

Fast forward to the past month, when Paul Heyman introduced his new client, the new ‘Paul Heyman Guy’, who was none other than a repackaged Joe, who was now called Curtis Axel. It is well known that anything Heyman touches turns into gold, whether it be a company like ECW, or individuals like Steve Austin or Brock Lesnar. Thus, Curtis found the two things he needed the most, which is a new character and a manager. And his first opponent was none other than Triple H, who competed in his first match on RAW after 3 long years! Although the ending wasn’t exactly the best way to put over Axel, it proved none the less that the management is interested in making Curtis the future of the company.

It’s an immense honor when legends themselves hand pick a guy they want to put over as the ‘soon to be’ face of the company, and Dean Ambrose and Curtis Axel found themselves at the right place. It will be interesting to see where this leads to, as Ambrose has already won the United States championship, and can be pushed into the main event scene soon, while Curtis already has two victories over the likes of Triple H and the WWE champion, John Cena! It’s also interesting to note that Curtis was a part of both the main events on RAW for 2 straight weeks! That’s the definition of an impressive debut!
