WWE News: Bret Hart talks about The Undertaker's role in the Montreal Screwjob aftermath

The Undertaker and Bret Hart had a classic feud in WWE before Hart left in 1997...

What’s the story?

Bret Hart recently sat down with Sports Illustrated to talk about several topics within the realm of pro-wrestling. One of those topics was The Undertaker’s involvement in the events after the famous Montreal Screwjob between Hart, Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon.

Before Bret left WWE for WCW, he was the leader of the locker room. He told Sports Illustrated that he wrote a letter to The Undertaker after joining WCW. That letter said that The Undertaker needs to take over as the leader of the locker room now that Bret is no longer with the company.

In case you didn’t know...

The Montreal Screwjob took place during the main event of the 1997 Survivor Series where Michaels and Hart were competing for the WWE Championship. At the end of the match, Michaels performed Hart’s own finisher, the Sharpshooter, on Bret. Just seconds after, Vince ordered referee Earl Hebner to ring the bell and end the match, making Michaels the new WWE Champion.

Everyone in the ring had a bewildered look on their face after the bell rang. Soon after that, Hart had a heated exchange with McMahon and then spit in his face.

The heart of the matter..

After the show went off the air, Hart noted that The Undertaker was pounding on Vince’s door demanding answers for what just happened. Taker was one of the few people on the roster that Vince would actually listen to.

In the end ‘Taker took Hart’s advice and became the leader of the locker room for a long time. He would listen to any issues the other wrestlers would have and then he could talk to Vince about it.

What’s next?

Bret Hart retired from the professional wrestling business in 2000 but continues to appear sporadically on WWE programming.

With the way that WrestleMania 33 ended, the next logical step for The Undertaker could be a WWE Hall Of Fame induction in New Orleans next year.

Author’s take...

I’ve always known that The Undertaker has been a prominent leader in the WWE locker room for many years now. What I didn’t know was that Bret Hart wrote a letter to The Undertaker to urge him to be the leader in 1997.

I have a lot of respect for Bret for doing that. It shows that he cared about those in the locker room even after he left for a rival company on bad terms.
