WWE News: Triple H praises the Mae Young Classic

What's the story?

Triple H has taken to social media to praise the work of everyone involved with the 2017 Mae Young Classic, after the first four episodes aired on the WWE Network this past Monday.

In case you didn't know...

At a press conference held over WrestleMania weekend, WWE announced that it would be holding the first ever Mae Young Classic at some point in 2017, a 32-woman single-elimination tournament on the WWE Network. The tournament had long been rumoured, following on from the successes of the Cruiserweight Classic and United Kingdom Championship tournament.

The first four rounds of competition were taped over two days in July at Full Sail University, and featured some of the top female professional wrestlers on the planet.

Toni Storm, Kairi Sane, Candice LeRae, Mia Yim and a host of others were involved, as the 32-field was whittled down to two over that summer weekend.

The first four episodes of the tournament were uploaded to the WWE Network this past Monday.

The heart of the matter

To celebrate the release of the first four episodes, WWE Executive Vice President of Talent Triple H took to social media to sing the praises of everyone who helped make the show happen, including the stars and the WWE staff.

Triple H has long been credited with the success of NXT since the show's revamping in 2012, a show which ultimately changed the way women's wrestling was perceived in the US mainstream. NXT is of course where Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and Bayley made their names.

Much like the Cruiserweight Classic, the Mae Young Classic is somewhat considered to be the creative baby of Triple H, and it is no surprise that "The Game" has taken to social media to support the show.

What's next?

The next collection of Mae Young Classic episodes will air on the WWE Network on September 4, before the live finals on September 12.

The initial reaction to the Mae Young Classic has been mixed, but then it must be remembered that the same lukewarm reception was given to the Cruiserweight Classic in 2016.

Others are complaining that four episodes being uploaded in one go makes no sense, but those voices must realise there is a very simple solution -- just watch one at a time. The Mae Young Classic is an objectively fantastic thing, and here's hoping big things lie ahead for many of the supremely talented women involved.
