Walter speaks out against claims WWE is bad for independent wrestling

What's the story?

Walter is appearing on WWE's Axxess event where he'll be wrestling against Kassius Ohno. However, the top indy wrestler has recently taken to Twitter to defend the WWE against claims that the company is harmful towards indy wrestling.

In case you didn't know...

It's WrestleMania weekend which means that the WWE is running a huge slate of shows in New Orleans from 'Mania itself to NXT TakeOver and the newly announced WWE Axxess event featuring four invitational tournaments and four title defences.

However, the WWE aren't alone in New Orleans with almost every major wrestling promotion heading over there to capitalise on a huge number of wrestling fans in one place.

Ring of Honor, Impact Vs Lucha Underground and a whole host of other great wrestling promotions are there. Here's what Dave Meltzer had to say about it in the recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

One of the biggest WrestleManias in history is the feature of perhaps the craziest week of pro wrestling action that has ever taken place in a single city. WWE and NXT have their biggest shows of the year. ROH has the biggest show in its history. Several independent groups will do more revenue this week than they'll do in several months.

The heart of the matter

Meltzer's comments are important because they echo the sentiments of what Walter is saying when he jumps to the defence of the WWE. What's happening in New Orleans is one of the biggest weekends in professional wrestling history and none of it would be possible without the WWE.

As you can see Walter uses New Orleans as an example of how WWE can actually support and supplement independent wrestling.

But that's not the only example: Triple-H has been a prominent supporter of several British promotions like Progress and ICW and has also recently made a statement indicating that he doesn't mind that other wrestling promotions have 'piggy-backed' on WrestleMania to profit, as long as they don't ruin wrestling for everyone else.

What's next?

Walter's status with the WWE is still unknown as of this point, it's possible the rumors of him and Keith Lee signing with the company were just for appearances at Axxess and not to actually join the company itself. We'll have to wait and see.

Author's take

The WWE gets a lot of criticism, sometimes fairly, but quite often simply because they are the biggest company in the industry so are often held to higher, sometimes impossible, standards by the wrestling community. That's why it's good to sit back, gain some perspective, and like Walter has done here, give them some credit where credit is due.
