WWE Rumors: Goldberg might return to the WWE once more

Who’s next for Goldberg?

What’s the story?

According to Dave Meltzer, Goldberg might make another come back to the WWE. On a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer opined that Goldberg’s merchandise was selling pretty well after his return, his character was blazing hot and the promos he cut were very strong.

He emphasised that the WWE didn’t really want to let Goldberg go as they were thoroughly impressed with his recent run and would most definitely look to bring him back in the future.

In case you didn’t know...

Bill Goldberg is a former football player, who rose to prominence in 1997 during his time as WCW’s top star. He would later compete in the WWE till his retirement in 2004. He returned after a 12-year hiatus in 2016, defeating Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series and then beating Kevin Owens for the WWE Universal title at Fastlane this year.

Goldberg retired once again after losing his title to Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 33.

The heart of the matter

Goldberg recently appeared on the RAW after Mania, after RAW went off-air and addressed the WWE Universe regarding his recent WWE return, stating that he’d be stepping away from the ring ‘for now’. The former WCW stalwart also said that no one could never rule out another comeback.

If one is to believe Dave Meltzer, the WWE will be looking to bring him back, presumably once again as a part-timer for WrestleMania 34 next year.

Furthermore, with Mick Foley and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin’s (Legend’s) contracts having run out, the Undertaker retired and The Rock unable to make the required number of appearances owing to his busy movie schedule, the WWE may experience a dearth of big-name veterans heading into next year’s Mania in New Orleans.

Considering that, the WWE’s plan to bring back Goldberg seems to be a real possibility.

What’s next?

After the recent departure of Foley, Steve Austin and the Undertaker, the WWE have roped in Kurt Angle as an on-screen authority figure and go-to veteran on its flagship show Monday Night RAW. Nevertheless, the WWE has not officially confirmed a potential Goldberg come back as of yet.

Author’s take

WrestleMania 33 featured several great matchups and performances that delivered in every sense of the term, which includes the Goldberg-Lesnar match that several fans and pundits alike expected to be a dud. The aforementioned matchup saw Lesnar work with Goldberg’s limitations as a performer and carry him through the motions.

Goldberg, on his part, did the best he could, and given his age and ring rust I’d say that he did extremely well at ‘Mania. That said, if the WWE does bring him back in the near future, they’d better keep him away from the company’s top belts and instead book him against a fellow legend/veteran.
