WWE Rumors: Jim Ross has signed a deal for 30-40 dates with the WWE

Jim Ross made his much awaited WWE return at Wrestlemania 33

What’s the story?

We had recently reported that Jim Ross, known to many professional wrestling fans as the greatest play-by-play announcer of all time, had signed a two-year contract with WWE. Wrestling Observer Newsletter recently revealed specific details about JR’s current status with the company.

In case you didn't know...

Jim Ross had been let go from WWE after an incident at the 2K Symposium in 2013, as a consequence of the actions of an inebriated Ric Flair. He made his return to the company at Wrestlemania 33, to call The Undertaker’s final match against Roman Reigns, in the main event.

After that, it was reported that Jim Ross had signed a two-year deal with the company but Ross had specified that he didn’t want to travel full-time on the road. It was unclear how involved Jim Ross would be, in the current WWE product.

The heart of the matter

Wrestling Observer Newsletter stated that Ross has signed a deal for 30-40 dates with the company, without divulging any specific details about his role. Unfortunately for fans, this means that he won’t be a full-time announcer for WWE, and will instead make special appearances.

It also opens up the possibility for Jim Ross to be part of specials for the WWE Network.

What’s next?

Expect Jim Ross to be a special attraction, calling the marquee matches in pay-per-views. Do not expect Ross to replace Mauro Ranallo, SmackDown Live announcer, who’s supposedly not going to be appearing on television following his recent mental health and altercation with fellow SmackDown Live announcer, JBL.

Author’s take

With the departure of Mauro Ranallo, who, in my opinion, is the best play-by-play announcer in the game today; Jim Ross definitely is the closest thing to a good announcer in the WWE now. His iconic voice can definitely make the big fights feel grand again!
