Smackdown kicks off with Reigns and Rusev staring down at each other

In the penultimate week before WWE Battleground takes the centre stage on July 20 in Tampa, Florida, WWE’s taped Smackdown episode from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada was broadcasted on Friday night.

The show proved to be an engaging night with a good build up to the pay-per-view feuds while there was a much anticipated heavyweight main event clash for the night. Chris Jericho was in action with WWE World Heavyweight Fatal 4-Way contender Randy Orton. We also learned that there will be two more title matches for the PPV at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

Here are the full results from the show.

Alexander Rusev and Roman Reigns stare off

The Belgian Brute and Lana kicked off Smackdown as the Ravishing Russian called Roman Reigns unworthy of being in the same ring with Rusev. Reigns made his way into the ring through the crowd to interrupt her. Reigns got to his point straightaway asking Rusev if he can outclass him tonight. Reigns warns Rusev that he will punch him in the face if he dares to make a move. This leads to a stare off between the two superstars which forces a referee to come out and stop them from fighting. Lana and Rusev leave the ring but not without the two staring at each other.

AJ Lee vs Cameron

AJ Lee and Cameron squared off in a non-title Divas match where Cameron attempted to walk away from. But her Funkadactyls partner Naomi tossed her back into the ring after which AJ hit the Shining Wizard for a three-count on Cameron.

Winner: AJ Lee

Adam Rose vs Fandango

With Layla at his corner, a confused Fandango entered the ring to face Adam Rose who had Summer Rae at ringside. Just minutes into the match and the action outside the ring overpowered their match as Layla and Rae started their own personal brawl. Fandango got out to separate the two only to get himself counted out. Summer walked away from ringside after which Fandango tried to ambush Rose but failed to do so as he got Party Fouled.

Winner: Adam Rose via count-out

The Usos vs Heath Slater and Titus O’Neil

The Tag-Team champion were in action next as they faced Heath Slater who was partnered by Titus O’Neil. It was an easy non-tile match for the Samoans as Jey Uso hit the Superfly Splash on Slater to pin him for the win.

Winner: The Usos

Chris Jericho vs Randy Orton

Chris Jericho vs Randy Orton

With 9 days to go for his Fatal 4-Way match against Reigns, Kane and John Cena at Battleground, Randy Orton was in action against Chris Jericho who himself had a personal rivalry going on with Bray Wyatt. It was an entertaining bout between two superstars who took themselves to their limits. After a lot of back and forth action, Jericho looked to go for the win by locking Orton in the Walls of Jericho, but The Wyatt entrance flashed and caused a slight distraction which enabled Orton to RKO Y2J pinning him for the victory.

Winner: Randy Orton

Summer Rae vs Layla

After their ringside brawl earlier in the night, a match was made between Layla and Rae with Fandango as the special guest referee. In the middle of the bout, Fandango stopped them from fighting sand started to dance. Layla and Rae stared at each other and then together attacked Fandango. Fandango manages to escape from the ring as he stares at his tow ex-girlfriends dancing in the ring together.

Goldust vs Curtis Axel

With Stardust at his corner, Goldust faced Curtis Axel who had Ryback behind him. Goldust won the bout after hitting Axel with the Curtain Call. After the match, Ryback would ambush Goldust, but Stardust would enter the ring, blowing stardust particles into the face of Ryback.

Winner: Goldust

Bo Dallas vs Diego and El Torito

It was time for some Bo-lieving as Bo Dallas went up against Diego and his WWE Raw victim, El Torito . It was a straight win for Bo as he hit the Bo-Dog on Diego to win the match. After that he tossed Torito in the ring and hit the Second Bo-Dog of the night to take out the pint-sized bull.

Winner: Bo Dallas

Roman Reigns vs Alexander Rusev

Roman Reigns vs Alexander Rusev

Roman Reigns would collide with “The Hero of the Russian Federation” Rusev, with Lana in his corner. During the match, Roman Reigns was about to deliver the Spear to Rusev when Randy Orton comes out, hanging Roman up on the top rope. After the match, Rusev would attack Roman from behind, but Roman would dodge Rusev and knock Orton off of the apron with the Superman Punch! However, this would give Rusev an opening to level Reigns with a huge sidekick, but Lana would call off the attack at this point, instructing Rusev to exit the ring.

After Rusev & Lana exit the ring, Randy Orton methodically enters the ring, picking Roman Reigns up and hitting Reigns with the RKO in the middle of the ring before “The Viper” looms over the fallen Roman. He then tried to go for the Spear but Reigns speared him first and stood tall as Smackdown concluded.
