WWE recently announced that Hell in a Cell 2021 will be the promotion's next major event in June. Usually, the pay-per-view used to take place during the month of October or late September since making its debut in 2009.

The event is centered around one of the most brutal and barbaric match types in WWE history, Hell In A Cell.

During the bout, a 20-foot high steel structure with a roof on top encloses the ring and the entire ringside area. With no disqualifications or count-outs, the only way to win the match is by pinfall or submission.

Several Hell in a Cell matches in WWE history are famous, and infamous, for a variety of reasons. But most of them are considered to be instant classics.

The list of superstars who have competed in the most Hell in a Cell matches reads like a who's who of WWE icons, current champions, and future Hall of Famers.

Let's take a closer look at WWE Superstars with the most Hell in a Cell appearances.

Several iconic WWE Superstars have competed in four Hell in a Cell matches during their respective careers.

These names include current WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, former World Heavyweight Champion John Cena and WWE Hall of Famers, Shawn Michaels and Mick Foley.

HBK competed in the very first Hell in a Cell match at Badd Blood: In Your House in 1997 where he defeated The Undertaker after interference from The Phenom's debuting younger brother, Kane.

Mick Foley participated in arguably the most infamous Hell in a Cell match in WWE when he faced off against The Undertaker at King of The Ring 1998. During the opening stages of the bout, The Undertaker famously threw Foley, competing as Mankind, off the top of the demonic structure through the Spanish announce table at ringside.

John Cena has competed in several major Hell in a Cell matches during his WWE career, facing off against long-time rival Randy Orton on two separate occasions.

Roman Reigns has seen some of his famous feuds culminate inside Hell In A Cell. His most recent outing inside the structure came during last year's Hell In A Cell pay-per-view event where he defeated his cousin, Jey Uso, in an "I Quit" Hell in a Cell Match to retain the Universal Championship.

Former WWE Champion CM Punk has made a total of five appearances inside the infamous Hell in a Cell structure during his WWE career.

The Second City Saviour's first appearance came in 2009 at the inaugural WWE Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event. Punk was unsuccessful in his defense of the World Heavyweight Championship against The Undertaker in the opening match of the show.

CM Punk's next appearance inside the demonic structure came during an often forgotten dark match after an episode of Monday Night RAW in September 2011. During the bout, John Cena successfully defended the WWE Championship against four WWE Superstars including CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler, and Jack Swagger.

This appearance was followed up once again at Hell In A Cell 2011 with Alberto Del Rio defeating CM Punk and John Cena in a Triple Threat Match to successfully capture the WWE Championship inside the structure.

CM Punk then collided with Ryback for two consecutive years inside Hell in a Cell. Punk successfully defended the WWE Championship against the then-undefeated star inside the devilish structure at the 2012 Hell in a Cell pay-per-view due to the interference of Brad Maddox.

CM Punk defeated Ryback and Paul Heyman the following year inside Hell in a Cell at the HIAC 2013 pay-per-view event in a 2-on-1 Handicap match.

14-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton has faced off against some of the most iconic names inside Hell in a Cell.

The Viper's first appearance inside the demonic structure came in a defeat against The Undertaker at the Armageddon 2005 pay-per-view event. This served as the final chapter of The Deadman and The Legend Killer's iconic feud on WWE television.

Orton's next appearance inside the structure came four years later when he defeated John Cena to become WWE Champion during the inaugural HIAC pay-per-view event. This was then followed by a successful WWE Championship defense against Sheamus inside Hell in a Cell the following year at the same event.

However, at HIAC 2021, Randy Orton was decisively defeated by Mark Henry, allowing the latter to retain his World Heavyweight Championship in the process.

Two years later, Orton would once again strike gold inside the structure as he defeated Daniel Bryan due to interference from Special Guest Referee Shawn Michaels. This allowed Orton to win the vacant WWE Title.

The Legend Killer squared off against long-term rival John Cena once again inside Hell in a Cell during HIAC 2014. However, Orton was unsuccessful in defeating Cena, allowing the Cenation Leader to become the No.1 Contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Randy Orton's final two Hell in a Cell appearances were both wins. He defeated Jeff Hardy inside the demonic structure in HIAC 2018 and captured the WWE Championship from Drew McIntyre during the same event last year.

Triple H is one of the most tenured Hell in a Cell performers in WWE history. The Game has defended the World Title multiple times inside the demonic structure and has faced off against some of the biggest stars in the business.

Triple H's first appearance inside Hell in a Cell came at the No Way Out 2000. He defeated Cactus Jack (Mick Foley) to retain the WWE Championship and seemingly retire his opponent from in-ring competition.

The Game's next appearance inside the hellish structure came during the infamous Hell in a Cell Match at Armageddon in 2000. Kurt Angle was able to defeat The Undertaker, Triple H, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Rikishi, and The Rock to retain the WWE Championship at the event.

Two years later, The Game once again competed in a Hell in a Cell match. This time, it was against WrestleMania X-8 opponent, Chris Jericho at Judgement Day 2002. Triple H was victorious over Y2J at the event.

From 2003-05, Triple H competed in all the three Hell in a Cell matches that took place in WWE.

The Game defeated Kevin Nash to retain the World Heavyweight Championship at Bad Blood 2003. This was followed by him defeating Shawn Michaels to retain the World Heavyweight Championship at Bad Blood 2004.

The Game's winning streak inside the structure was finally snapped by Batista at Vengeance 2005, allowing The Animal to successfully retain the World Heavyweight Championship.

Triple H's next two appearances inside Hell in a Cell came by teaming with HBK as a member of D-Generation X.

DX defeated Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon, and The Big Show in a 3-on-2 Handicap Hell in a Cell match at Unforgiven 2006.

This was followed by Triple H and Shawn Michaels defeating Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase in the main event of the inaugural Hell in a Cell pay-per-view in 2009.

The former WWE Champion's last Hell in a Cell match came at WrestleMania XXVIII against The Undertaker. The Deadman defeated The Game to not only end an era but also extend his mythic WrestleMania undefeated streak to 20-0.

Future Hall of Famer The Undertaker holds the record for the most appearances by a WWE Superstar in Hell in a Cell matches.

As mentioned earlier in the article, the former World Heavyweight Champion competed in the very first Hell in a Cell match at Badd Blood: In Your House in 1997 against Shawn Michaels.

This was then followed by arguably the most famous Hell in a Cell match in WWE history as The Undertaker defeated Mankind (Mick Foley) at King of The Ring 1998.

Throughout his illustrious WWE career, The Undertaker has competed in numerous matches inside the demonic structure against the likes of The Big Boss Man, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, Batista, Edge, CM Punk, Kane, and many more.

One of The Undertaker's most famous ones came at WrestleMania XXVIII in the "End of an Era" match against Triple H with Shawn Michaels serving as the Special Guest Referee.

The Undertaker was able to defeat The Game inside Hell In A Cell and extend his WrestleMania undefeated streak to 20-0.

The Phenom's final Hell in a Cell match came at WrestleMania 32 in Dallas, Texas. He faced off against Shane McMahon inside the demonic structure, marking the latter's first match inside a WWE ring in over seven years.

Had Shane O'Mac won the match, he would have gained control of Monday Night RAW and The Undertaker would have been barred from competing at WrestleMania ever again in his career.

Unfortunately for McMahon, The Demon of Death Valley was able to prevail and left WrestleMania victorious.

With a record-setting 14 appearances inside Hell in a Cell, it is without question that The Undertaker is the greatest performer inside the demonic structure.
