WWE: Top 5 storylines going into SummerSlam

Randy Orton

We’re only a couple of weeks away from the biggest party of the summer – SummerSlam. Going into the PPV, the top three bouts on the card can make this PPV one of the best this year, if not the best. With some incredible match ups, a lot can be expected from the Pay Per View, but in the end, it is upto the WWE to deliver. After months of anticipation, WWE finally heard the voices of the WWE Universe and put Daniel Bryan in the main event match against the WWE champion, John Cena. Also, Christian won the number one contender’s match this past week on Smackdown! and he will be facing Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight championship. With the ‘Paul Heyman guys’ finally turning on each other, CM Punk will go toe to toe with the behemoth, Brock Lesnar. In this article, I take a look at the top 5 storylines going into the PPV.

5. Randy Orton’s win at the Money in the Bank PPV

At the Money in the Bank PPV, Randy Orton achieved something that no one saw coming, retrieving the Money in the Bank briefcase during the All – Stars match. With Orton now having the opportunity to cash – in the briefcase anytime he wants within the next year, he has made it clear that he will cash it in at any opportunistic moment he gets. If we believe the rumours, Orton is scheduled to cash – in his briefcase at SummerSlam PPV, thus defeating the winner of the WWE championship match between John Cena and Daniel Bryan, and finally turning heel in the process. With Vince saying that neither Cena nor Bryan are the WWE champions he wants, this may also lead to Orton aligning himself with Vince McMahon.

4. Christian faces Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight championship

On Smackdown! Christian won the number one contender’s match for the World Heavyweight championship, thus earning the right to face Alberto Del Rio at SummerSlam. If anyone remembers, Christian won his first World championship against Alberto Del Rio two years ago in a ladder match, and hence, this can also be brought up in their feud going into the PPV. I would love to see Christian become the World champion one more time, with Alberto Del Rio not living upto WWE’s expectations as the champion. Although that might not happen, this brings up an interesting scenario with Christian going back into the main event scene.

3. Team Rhodes Scholars turn on each other

One of the best things going into SummerSlam is the feud between Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow. After being relegated to the mid card, Cody and Sandow took part in the Money in the Bank ladder match for the World Heavyweight championship, and after Cody put on the performance of the night, he was an inch away from getting his hands on the briefcase, only to be betrayed by Damien Sandow. Since then, they have been involved in an interesting feud with Cody getting back at Sandow. This will likely lead to their match at SummerSlam, which can settle the winner once and for all. This match will also likely involve the stipulation that the winner will be the rightful owner of the Money in the Bank briefcase, which will only make the match more important.

2. Daniel Bryan finally gets his due

Daniel Bryan

After months of being the hottest star in the company, Daniel Bryan finally got his due, as he was selected as the number one contender by the WWE Universe. Daniel Bryan will now face the WWE champion John Cena at SummerSlam for the WWE championship, and if rumours are to be believed, he is set to beat John Cena at the PPV. With Randy Orton having the opportunity to cash – in his briefcase, that will likely happen after Bryan wins, thus leading to Orton turning heel in the process. Whatever may happen, there are three scenarios which will impact the WWE.

1. Paul Heyman chooses his number one client

At the Money in the Bank PPV, Paul Heyman finally turned on the Second City Saviour, costing him the match in the process. Since then, Lesnar and Heyman attacked CM Punk, and have done everything in their power to make his life miserable. Heyman claimed Lesnar to be his number one client, and come SummerSlam, Punk will face the beast in a dream match, which will likely settle their feud. CM Punk hasn’t been the WWE champion for months, and after SummerSlam, it is likely that Punk will be inserted back in the main event scene. Whatever may happen, SummerSlam has all the elements to be the best PPV of the year. We now have to wait and see if WWE pulls the trigger and makes this event memorable.
