HBO, via Deadline, just announced that The Last of Us season 2 is coming out in the first half of 2025. They started filming in British Columbia in February of this year under the working title Mega Sword and should be done by August.

The show, inspired by the hit video game series, is going to keep following Joel and Ellie, played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. In the next season, they're bringing in some new faces like Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, and Dina, played by Isabela Merced.

The creators of the show, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, have mentioned that they might expand the story over several seasons and are dedicated to staying true to the original material while adding in some fresh ideas.

When is The Last of Us season 2's release window?

As mentioned, The Last of Us season 2 will premiere in 2025. Production on the highly anticipated second season begins in early 2024 and is expected to be completed by August 2024. Post-production, including editing, special effects, and other finishing touches, will take several months, pushing the release window to mid-2025. The release time is also affected by HBO's scheduling strategy.

HBO is dropping The White Lotus season 3 early in 2025, and then they'll roll out The Last of Us so they don't clash and both get their time in the spotlight. The Last of Us season 2 will introduce fresh faces and pick up where the second game left off, with a time jump of five years as Ellie embarks on a revenge mission in a grittier, more intense storyline.

They're currently filming in Vancouver, a city with lots of different spots that can double for the post-apocalyptic world of the show.

The production team has been busy working on the new season, sharing behind-the-scenes updates, and giving fans a sneak peek with some first-look images. The Last of Us season 2 will jump ahead five years from where Season 1 left off, following Ellie as she seeks revenge.

What can we expect from The Last of Us Season 2?

Season 2 will be even darker and more intense than before. It picks up right where the second game left off, with Ellie on a mission for revenge in Seattle. And a big part of the story is about Ellie going after a group led by this new character, Abby. This storyline explores themes like revenge, grief, and the tough choices we make to stay alive. Fans of the game can pick up on familiar plot points and maybe some extra stuff to enhance the story.

We've got some new faces joining the cast, like Isabela Merced playing Dina, Ellie's girlfriend, and Young Mazino as Jesse, Ellie's buddy. The upcoming season is going to have more action and more infection, which is something fans asked for after the first season. This should make for a more exciting and intense viewing experience. As they continue making the show, they'll share more updates, behind-the-scenes stuff, and teasers to get us excited for the 2025 release.
