Saina Nehwal wins Denmark Open Superseries title

Indian Badminton Queen and London Olympics Bronze medallist Saina Nehwal has won the Yonex Denmark Open Superseries Premier by defeating World No. 7 and 6th seed of the tournament Juliane Schenk of Germany in the Final. Saina thrashed the German 21-17, 21-8 in only 35 minutes to win the Denmark Open Title.

The ace shuttler from Hyderabad, who is ranked No 4 in the world, had defeated top seed and World No 1 Wang Yihan in Saturday’s semifinal. In the Quarterfinal, Saina defeated local girl and World No. 6 Tine Baun. Saina was playing her first tournament after the London Olympics and was in top form for the entirety of the tournament as she didn’t lose even a single game throughout the Championship.

Saina started the final match with a bang as she took the starting 4 points and continued her great form to make the score 8-2, but then Schenk made a good comeback and made the scores 9-9. Both the players played neck to neck till 17-17, but then Saina took the next four points in a row to win the first game 21-17. It was a brilliant start of the second game by both players but after 5-5, it was all Saina. The Indian, who was leading 11-7 in the first half of the second game, took the next 10 points out of the 11 to win the game by 21-8. Saina won the championship point rather easily as Schenk couldn’t even return the Indian’s serve. The victory was sweet revenge for Saina who had lost in straight games to Schenk last year.

This is Saina’s second Premier title of the year and 6th Super Series Title of her career, and her first in Europe. In June, Saina lifted the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold title before winning the Indonesian Open Super Series Premier.

“I thank Denmark and the Indian fans here for supporting me. I never expected to win this tournament,” an elated Saina said after the win which took her overall lead against Schenk to 6-3.
