Former New York Mets star Bartolo Colon disclosed the origin of his iconic nickname, "Big Sexy" in his book, "Big Sexy: In His Own Words." It was originally published on May 12, 2020. Apparently, the former right-hander acquired the "Big Sexy" nickname in 2015 from fellow Mets teammate Noah Syndergaard.

"Noah Syndergaard just started calling me Big Sexy in 2015, and the name stuck. I don't think I'm sexy, but if the fans like the name, I like it, too," writes Colon in his book.

Interestingly, Colon applied for a trademark on the "Big Sexy" nickname in 2016.

Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Colon was signed by the Cleveland Indians as an amateur free agent in 1993. He made his MLB debut against the Los Angeles Angels on April 4, 1997. Colon played for 11 MLB teams during his career, which spanned between 1997-2017.

Additionally, Bartolo Colon became the second-oldest Mets player to hit a home run. Julio Franco holds the record after hitting a home run at 48-years old off Randy Johnson on May 4, 2007.

Colon amassed a 247-188 record, 4.12 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over a span of 2461.2 innings pitched in the majors. He also recorded 2535 strikeouts and 948 walks.

'Big Sexy' was also selected to four MLB All-Star games in 1998, 2005, 2013 and 2016. He won the American League CY Young Award and was the AL Wins leader in 2005.
