New York Yankees coach on Oswaldo Cabrera's versatility: "It’s not as easy as he makes it look"

New York Yankees' Oswaldo Cabrera insists he is happy to play where the team needs him, as long as he is on the field. The 24-year-old has transformed himself into the ultimate utility player, at it is paying off. Cabrera can play a variety of positions and do so effectively.

Cabrera has impressed with his glove since being promoted to the majors. With the start of the season only a few weeks away, he will be an important piece for manager Aaron Boone. His progress and ability to adapt on the field have impressed the coaching staff.

Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza was the latest to praise the young Venezuelan:

"He’s got really good instincts that sometimes he makes it look really, really easy. But it’s not as easy as he makes it look."

Per a recent piece in the New York Post, Mendoza credited Cabrera's work ethic, understanding of the game, and positive attitude towards his development.

Cabrera made his MLB debut as a third-baseman against the Tampa Bay Rays in August. He has played as a second baseman, shortstop and outfielder as well in 2022.

Since the beginning of spring training, Cabrera has been used in left field, right field, and third base. Aaron Boone recently stated that he plans to try him in the center field as well.

There have been questions surrounding the shortstop and left field position for the New York Yankees. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Oswald Peraza, and Anthony Volpe are all possible fits at shortstop. Aaron Hicks and Estevan Florial are in contention for the outfield.

Cabrera has experience in both those positions. He has made it clear that he will play whatever position the manager wants.

Currently, Cabrera has a lot going for him. He is an above-average hitter, he is versatile defensively, and most importantly, he has a positive attitude. The Yankees will likely use him in several different positions in 2023.
