Fans admonish Boston Red Sox for allowing the most home runs in MLB so far: "Almost like maybe they should have invested in pitching"

Chris Sale of the Boston Red Sox has been indicative of his team's pitching woes so far this year

With a combined ERA of 4.49 in 2022, starters on the Boston Red Sox combined for the ninth highest number in the MLB. So far in 2023, things have shown no signs of improving.

The Red Sox have given up a total of 13 home runs so far in the 2023 season, which places the team first in the category by a significant margin.

No pitcher has exemplified the emergent pitching woes of the Red Sox better than 34-year-old Chris Sale. Sale was called upon to pitch for the Red Sox on April 1, marking the 6-foot-6 left-hander's first start in the month since 2019.

After giving up two solo home runs to the Baltimore Orioles in the first inning, Sale's day ended after he surrendered a three-run shot to O's outfielder Cedric Mullins in the sixth inning.

After a harsh outing, Sale hoped to have a better chance in an April 6 outing against the Detroit Tigers.

Red Sox fans do not seem surprised. After losing starters Nathan Eovaldi to the Texas Rangers and Michael Wacha in offseason free agency, the fanbase is starting to look increasingly worried about the outlook of their rotation with Chris Sale at the helm.

The game was tied at zero when Tigers catcher Jake Rogers stepped up to the plate. After a ball for the first pitch, Rogers absolutely crushed a fastball from Chris Sale into the left field bleachers at Comerica Park.

Sale signed a five-year contract worth $145 million with the Boston Red Sox in 2020. However, the injury-stricken southpaw has only started 12 games in that time.

The Boston Red Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 6-3. Sale lasted five innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits.

Chris Sale is running out of time to prove himself to the Boston Red Sox

Although Sale underwent Tommy John surgery in his 30s, hope is not lost on the big man. Sale has finished in the top five in Cy Young voting five times in his career.

Although the magic that he demonstrated in years past is yet to be showcased to Boston Red Sox fans, Sale has the entire rest of the season to prove to fans that he still possesses value to the team.
