New York Mets ace Justin Verlander seems to have perfectly blended into his new organization, stamping his authority both as a pitcher and a senior voice.

He was captured keeping a close eye on fellow New York Mets pitcher David Peterson after a bullpen session earlier this week. He was left quite impressed with what the young man had to offer.

The pair displayed different grips to each other and even mentally broke a couple of pitches. Verlander went on to exchange a ball with the youngster, who obliged and did the same.

Justin Verlander, who claimed he was just happy to help, rated the young star, who is a strong candidate to enter the rotation after Jose Quintana’s injury.

“What’s not to like?” Justin Verlander said this week about Peterson. “I mean, s–t, I’m just trying to tip my toes in the water … trying to watch guys and see if there’s any way I can help.”

Peterson, in awe of Verlander's wizardry, couldn't have asked for anybody better to learn from, referring to his interaction with the veteran as "cool".

“As a guy that is a lot earlier in my career, to have someone like that with a lot of experience and has seen a lot, for me to be able to work with him is awesome,” Peterson said. “It’s cool to just kind of talk pitching for a couple of minutes.”

Peterson was drafted by the New York Mets with the 20th pick in the first round of the 2017 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut on July 28, 2020, against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, securing the win for his team after pitching 5 2⁄3 innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits and an error with two walks and three strikeouts in 78 pitches. Peterson described it as "one of the greatest days of" his life.
