New York Yankees relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle could miss up to a month due to biceps tendinitis in his right throwing arm. Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that Kahnle is in the midst of an initial 10-day shutdown from throwing.

Boone told the New York Post:

"We’ll be careful and not rush him, but it should keep him in line."

Kahnle, who is yet to throw in a Spring Training game, underwent an MRI last week which revealed the source of the pitcher's pain. Boone told the Post:

"We had it imaged and everything and there’s no change in his physical stuff and shoulder. Just a little biceps tendinitis. So he should get through it in the next week and start ramping him up."

The New York Yankees faithful took the news in stride, as Kahnle is likely down the list of players they'd least like to see sidelined.

Kahnle signed up for a return to the New York Yankees by inking a two-year, $11.5 million contract. An eight-year major league veteran, Kahnle has had his share of injury difficulties. In 2020, his four-year turn with the Yankees ended after just one appearance as he was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

He pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, but was shut down from May through December due to right forearm inflammation.

New York fans are concerned that tendinitis may be just the start of injury matters for Kahnle, but the team does have a good bit of bullpen depth to withstand his absence.

Kahnle is one of seven right-handers in the Yankees bullpen, according to Fangraphs.com. Currently, New York's lone lefty is 31-year-old Wandy Peralta. MLB analysts believe Peralta may have set a new MLB record by striking out Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Tucupita Marcano on three pitches in just 20 seconds on March 2.

If there had to be an injury in the Yankees bullpen, Kahnle is among the most replaceable pitchers on the staff.

Kahnle has pitched half of his major-league career with the New York Yankees

Kahnle has a 6-3 record and a 3.78 ERA in four seasons with the Yankees from 2017-2020. Overall, he is 9-9 with a 3.78 ERA. All 298 of his major-league appearances have come out of the bullpen. He has also pitched for the Dodgers, Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox.
