Back in 1998, the three-time world champion Darryl Strawberry was sued by his lawyer because he had not paid him.

Strawberry hired Robert Shapiro, an attorney who also represented O.J. Simpson. Shapiro was hired for a contract settlement with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994.

However, Shapiro claimed that Strawberry had not paid him his pre-agreed $100,000 legal fees. This led to the attorney filing a case against the New York Yankees legend. The case that Shapiro filed alleged:

"Despite (Strawberry’s) repeated assurances of payment, he continues to breach his agreement with (Shapiro).″

Shapiro also added a 10% interest per year for the amount that he alleges Darryl Strawberry owes him. To this accusation, Strawberry had the following to say in his defense:

"He’s already done it. It’s the same thing, it’s not any different.″

The former Yankees right fielder added:

"He’s just trying to claim something that he didn’t even do. ... It’s nothing I worry myself about.″

In March 1999, Shapiro and Strawberry resolved their dispute.

Darryl Strawberry was a star player, but he was hampered by alcohol and drug addictions throughout his career.

The right fielder also suffered from cancer, which resulted in him losing his left kidney. After much treatment, Strawberry made a full recovery.

Now it seems that the former Yankees star wants to spread the good fortune that has been bestowed upon him. After attending an evangelical church, Strawberry changed for the better and is now a preacher. He said the following in an interview about the transition:

“I would have never thought that was the true calling in my life. And I would have a chance to experience the true meaning of life and be able to go to places I always wanted to go.”

After visiting Israel, Strawberry wanted to increase awareness of the country's importance. He said the following regarding the matter:

“I think the most important thing is, as a non-Jewish person, you have to be able to educate them about Israel. I think in this country, a lot of people talk about Israel, and talk about the Jewish people, but they’ve never been there. So they don’t even have a clue.”

However, Darryl Strawberry insisted that he keeps his faith separate from politics and doesn't mix the two together. He says that he became a preacher because he wanted to help as many people as he possibly could.
