The LSU Tigers made a splash in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft as they had three different players selected. However, the program was only able to have one player get drafted in the second round.

#1. Maason Smith, Jacksonville Jaguars

The only LSU Tigers player to be selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft was defensive tackle Maason Smith. He was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 48 pick who are looking to bolster their defensive line.

He gives a sense of playing similar to Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Maason Smith with his size and quickness off the ball. Defensive tackle was one of Jacksonville's biggest needs, and he will slide right into the second defensive tackle spot behind Arik Armstead.

He may not have had the numbers that you would want from a star defensive tackle but he was able to force 18 quarterback hurries with the LSU Tigers in 2023. He finished the season with 27 total tackles, two pass deflections and 2.5 sacks.

It may take a year or two for Maason Smith to develop into a star in the middle of the defensive line but he is going to be able to do a lot of the little things for the Jaguars right away. With the pressure he forces, it could open up another member of the defense to get into the backfield as the offensive line is focused on not letting him beat them.

He was coming off tearing his ACL in his left knee during the first game of the 2022 season and came back and looked like his dominant self. He did not have a great game, but continued to be a force against the pass. He will need to improve in defending the run and closing the gap.
