5 players who were unlucky to miss out on India's ODI squad against England

The Senior Selection Committee of the BCCI met today in Bengaluru to pick the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June as well as the limited-overs series against England. They also selected the India 'A' team which will tour the Old Blighty.

One look at the ODI squad and it presents a strong picture. However, there will be a few players who will feel a bit let down especially after their performances in domestic cricket.

Here's a look at five players who could consider themselves unlucky at not having found a berth in the ODI squad:

#5 Manoj Tiwary

The Bengal batsman, who last played for India in 2015, may not have had an impactful IPL yet, but he sure racked up the runs in the Vijay Hazare trophy earlier.

328 runs in 6 matches at an average of 109.33 meant he was undeniably Bengal's best batsman in the competition.

Ambati Rayudu's selection in the ODI squad, however, would raise optimism for the right-hander as the selectors clearly don't have age as their most important requirement but back form as the main criterion.

Another good competition with the bat could well brighten his chances.

#4 Axar Patel

The Gujarat all-rounder, who has largely been on the fringes thanks to the stellar performances of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, was not picked in the squad as the selectors opted to go for Washington Sundar as the finger-spinner option.

The 24-year-old, who last featured for India in ODI cricket against New Zealand last year, has not had the best of IPLs with the Kings XI Punjab and he did not make any impact in the Vijay Hazare Trophy either.

However, Patel will be playing county cricket for Durham in August and a good time there with both bat and ball could get him back in the reckoning.

#3 Suryakumar Yadav

The Mumbai batsman has had a good last couple of months with the bat, racking up the runs both in 50-over as well as 20-over cricket.

In the Vijay Hazare trophy, the right-hander made 364 runs in 7 matches at an average of 60 and he has backed that effort with 399 runs in the 10 matches that he has played so far in the IPL for the Mumbai Indians.

If he can maintain the same level of consistency then perhaps he could find himself in the standby list soon.

#2 Rishab Pant

Pant has been in good form for the Daredevils in the IPL

The swashbuckling Delhi wicket-keeper was ignored in favour of Dinesh Karthik, but has had a good time with the bat both in 50-over cricket as well as 20-over cricket.

In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Pant made 266 runs in 7 matches at an average of 44 and in the IPL thus far, he has made 393 runs in 10 matches at a strike-rate of 173.12.

Following the tour of England, India are scheduled to play West Indies at home. He could hope to get a look in at some point then.

#1 Mayank Agarwal

The Karnataka batsman can consider himself very unlucky to not get a berth in the ODI squad despite making a whopping 723 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Karnataka in 8 matches at an average of 90.

What might have gone against him is that he has not had the best of IPLs for the Kings XI Punjab, but strictly based on his 50-over exploits, he could have got a look-in.

Quite a few felt he was a touch unlucky to not get the nod for the Nidahas Trophy, but strictly based on his performances in 50-over cricket, Agarwal could have been selected in the squad for England and he will surely wonder what more he needs to do to get himself in the national setup.
