5 weird Run out incidents in cricket

Weird, Funny, bizarre! With an enormous number of cricket matches (including tests, ODI, T20, IPL etc.) behind us, you can find a good number of incidents on the cricket field and have a hearty laugh over these. The competition on the field during a match usually remains intense but such incidents make the game interesting. Presenting here a list of five run out incidents that I consider worth noticing. By run out incidents, I do not mean only those in which a batsman has actually lost his wicket. Sometimes the fielders do unusual things to run a batsman out but fail. Here goes the list:

#5: Mitchell Johnson’s footwork

You are supposed to play cricket on a cricket field, not football! But on the day 2 of Australia vs New Zealand 1st test in 2010, Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson sent back NZ batsman Peter Ingram by running him out using his foot. When NZ batsmen were trying to steal a quick single, Johnson kicked the ball that went on to hit the stumps. For this unusual style of run out, this incident is on No. 5 in the list. Have a look!

#4: Dean Jones got out twice on one ball

Well, this one is an old one. This incident happened during the 2nd test of the Frank Worrell Trophy 1991 between West Indies and Australia. Dean Jones was on 3 out of 8 balls when he got bowled in the second innings. Dejected with his performance, Jones was returning back to the pavilion without even waiting for umpire’s signal. But it was a no ball and Jones didn’t see umpire showing the no ball sign. But smart West Indies fielders uprooted the stumps with the ball before Dean Jones could understand and come back to the crease.

#3: Who should we laugh at? Sachin, Kumble or Bangladesh fielders?

This one is from the India’s Bangladesh tour in 2004. The first test was played at Bangbandhu stadium, Dhaka and the match is remembered for Sachin’s 248 not out against a hapless Bangladeshi bowling attack. But that fine innings of 248 also includes a funny incident like this. A mix up between the two Indian batsmen Sachin and Anil Kumble while taking a second run. The scene was funny as you can’t decide who should you laugh at; Sachin, Kumble or Bangladeshi fielders. Perhaps the Bangladeshi fielders as they couldn’t run out anyone even after dislodging the wickets at both the end. Watch it yourself.

#2: Boy, watch the expressions on Dhoni’s face after this

This one is from the IPL 2009. The match was between CSK and DC. I bet no run-out incident in the world of cricket is funnier than this. And guess what no one was out even after fielders attempted 3 times. Bonus: Expressions on Dhoni’s face and commentary of Harsha Bhogle ;D

#1: Two batsmen running towards same end?

This one tops the list easily. This runout involving Runako Morton and Shivnaraine Chanderpaul happened during the West Indian 1st innings of the 3rd Test vs New Zealand in 2006. Morton hits the ball to mid-on and ran to get a single. Non striker Shivnaraine Chanderpaul took a few steps but then decided to go back to the non striker end. However Chanderpaul was completely ignorant that Morton was also running towards that end. Morton believed he was run out and started to walk off. But there was another drama waiting. The Third Umpire viewed the footage and it was confirmed that Morton grounded his bat at the non striker end before Chanderpaul declaring the latter out.
