mohammad azharuddin: ghosts of match fixing back again

The Badminton Association of India has received letters from no less than 22 state Badminton federations stating their displeasure and contesting former Indian cricket team captain Mohammed Azharuddin’s eligibility in running for the elections for the president of Badminton Association of India.

They protest that Azhar had been given a life ban by BCCI for his famous involvement in match-fixing a decade ago, so he cannot take part in the administration of any sport. Yet the Hyderabadi is confident that he can contest the elections on all accounts.

Only a few days ago, he had expressed his desire to apply to the top post of the BAI. On June13, his nomination for that will be confirmed and the elections may also take place the same day. Although many would want to remove the current president VK Verma who has completed twelve years at the helm, none of them want Azhar in his place. Lately, the BAI maintains too that Azhar would not be allowed to apply for the post.

Having been a veteran of 99 Test matches, Azhar was in his prime one of the most graceful batsmen to watch. His involvement in match fixing was an unfortunate thing to happen to such a good player. His misdeeds have come back to haunt him.
