Cricket Awards of the week #2

Chuck

Eden Gardens Award for Unruly Behaviour in Other Fields: The Gurgaon crowd that showed up for the Metallica gig on the 28th of October. They had all it takes to win this award. Something went wrong, so they behaved like morons till everything got called off. Only thing missing was Kambli not leaving the grounds in tears.

Blackberry Outage Award: The honourable BCCI’s website. Which celebrates its totalitarianism of not allowing anyone else to provide live scores of the Ranji Trophy, by providing live scores…er…at the end of the day’s play.

Rajnikanth Award For Paternal Recycling: The man who plays the son of actresses who used to be heroines opposite him years back in his career recognizes cricketers who go through (almost) the same cycle. We honour Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly had played for India when Deep Dasgupta first donned the wicket keeping gloves in any format, then went onto play for India under Ganguly. Now, things come a full circle as Dasgupta is the chairman of selection committee for Bengal which picked Ganguly in the team for this season. Very deep.

Chris Tavare Reincarnation Award: In the 1980s, instead of reading their kids lullabies, English parents used to make their kids watch unedited innings of Chris Tavare. In this day and age of the DLF Maximum, you wouldn’t think such defensive tactics would work. However, there are a few gems, and they must be honoured. This time, the award goes to the man who consumed 86 balls to score 9 runs and save the test for the team – Misbah-ul-Haq.
