Ewie Cronje, the father of the late Hansie Cronje, feels that there was no reason to file charges against his son now.
Ewie said that as the Delhi police had no evidence against him earlier, there was no reason to believe that they could find it now, as it has been 13 years since the case first broke out.
“They had the opportunity to charge (Hansie) then, but they could find nothing then. What will they find now?” Ewie Cronje told the Afrikaans daily Beeld yesterday.
Delhi police had named the former captain of South Africa as an accused in the 2000 match-fixing scandal, while no other cricketer has been named in the charge sheet.
South Africa had set-up the Kings Commission to probe into the matter and when faced by the commission, Hansie had admitted to taking money as a bribe to fix a match in India, which resulted in a life ban from the sport.
The former South Africa captain met with a tragic end when he died in a plane crash in 2002.
While Ewie Cronje added that it was a positive development that the professional gamblers who were the root cause of all the happenings were likely to be punished, he was doubtful about how much these developments will deliver.
He was also of the belief that Hansie was not as guilty as he was projected and was also not the only one involved. Subsequently Nicky Boje, Herschelle Gibbs and Henry Williams were also named in the scandal, adding credibility to Ewie Cronje’s argument.
